Social Media and Your Business [ BeritaTerkini ]

Social media is the great equalizer. It provides unprecedented access to the smallest of players and gives them the ability to sound off, connect and drive business. It turns anyone with a smartphone, computer and Internet access a marketer. The only question is the one that most can’t answer; how do I actually do it?

The answer isn’t complicated when you get down to the nuts and bolts of using social media. Take Twitter. I was interviewed by CNN two weeks ago and the producer for the segment asked me about my new book and some other things related to my background. He told me about his own current book project and I shared some insights into what he might do to be successful in launching it. “Sho,” which is his real name, tweeted me shortly after I left and thanked me for the advice I provided. He didn’t email me, but instead found my Twitter handle and sent me a direct message.

Since that encounter a couple of weeks ago, we have been having an ongoing conversation on Twitter. He doesn’t have my cell phone, yet we can text back and forth in real time just as you would do with a real text message on the phone — one on one, but also one on one to many. That’s the beauty of Twitter. My 3,000-plus followers are able to see the conversations I’m having, since they are public, but they can just as easily be private messages. I just choose to make them public.

That’s a one-on-one example from somebody who actually met me. What about someone whom I’ve never met? Use a hashtag (#) to find people based on information they have shared on Twitter. For instance, let’s say you are looking to connect with people who are well versed about Hanoi in Vietnam.  You could simply input #Hanoi on Twitter and the most recent posts from people who have used that hashtag show up. I did this myself on my last trip there a year and half ago.

Indeed, I discovered many different individuals who knew about specific destinations and started to have one-on-one conversations with them. I was literally able to “find” people based on the conversations they were having about a place I was interested in. They were able to provide insights and ideas for a trip that was going to take place, and I had never even met them. That’s the power of Twitter and another reason why you should be on it.

At its roots, Twitter is a personalized search engine that returns results based on that # symbol. Instead of a web page, you get someone’s musings or thoughts or shared information. A lot of it is junk, but then again so is much of the web in general. By searching based on your criteria, you can bypass that junk and get to the conversations that matter.

Creating a conversation is what social media is all about.  My “aha” moment with Twitter came when I associated its platform with texting. It was like, “duh, now I get it.”

It used to cost tens of millions of dollars to build a brand or get noticed, but social media platforms have changed the game. You can now effectively build a brand with little to no investment, other than your time. Understanding only comes with experimentation. It’s time to step into the social media laboratory.

U.S. food group faces legal trouble in fight over GMO labeling [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Carey Gillam

(Reuters) – A lobbying group for major U.S. food manufacturers continues to run afoul of campaign finance laws in the way that it has contributed funds to block a measure that would require labeling of genetically modified foods in Washington state, according to a statement issued Wednesday by the state’s attorney general.

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said he will amend a lawsuit filed October 16 to raise the total amount he alleges the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) illegally concealed to $ 11 million, from the $ 7.2 million in the original complaint.

GMA represents some of the world’s largest food and beverage companies and is lobbying heavily against the measure known as I-522 that is set for a public vote in Washington state on November 5. GMA is the largest contributor to the “No on 522″ campaign.

The I-522 requires labeling of foods that are made with genetically altered crops as well as labeling of genetically engineered seeds and seed products sold in the state.

This measure would be the first of its kind in the United States and both the food industry and biotech seed companies, including Monsanto and DuPont, have poured roughly $ 22 million into a campaign to defeat it.

The attorney general earlier alleged that the GMA illegally collected and spent more than $ 7 million while shielding the identity of its contributors. After the suit was filed, the GMA registered its political committee on October 18 and produced information about a portion of its member contributions.

But the attorney general said Wednesday that $ 3.8 million in contributions appear to have been collected by the GMA from its members before it registered a political action committee, and the contributions were not reported when it submitted its disclosure documents on October 18.

“These contributions increase the total amount the GMA received and expended on electoral activity in Washington without timely registering as political committee and reporting the full amount of contributions collected,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement.

GMA officials said in a statement that it has provided “full transparency” to voters in regard to contributions made.

“Every single GMA contribution to the campaign and the original source of those funds (including detailed lists of companies and dollar amounts) has been reported to the Washington State Public Disclosure Commission,” the group said.

The Yes on 522 campaign, which is pushing for labeling of GMO foods, repeated allegations that the food and biotech seed industry is trying to unfairly “buy” the election.

“It is clear that the GMA … broke the law. Not once but multiple times now,” said Delana Jones, campaign manager for Yes on 522.

As of Tuesday, proponents of labeling had raised roughly $ 6.8 million, compared to about $ 22 million raised by opponents, according to the Washington Public Disclosure Commission.

Marvin Gaye’s family sues ‘Blurred Lines’ composers [ BeritaTerkini ]

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Family of late soul singer Marvin Gaye sued R&B recording artists Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for copyright infringement on Wednesday, accusing them of stealing from the Motown legend’s musical composition for the hit single “Blurred Lines.”

The suit was filed as a counter-claim to a case brought preemptively by Thicke and Williams in August seeking a court ruling to establish that “Blurred Lines” did not infringe on Gaye’s rights to his 1977 hit, “Got to Give it Up,” as members of his family had said publicly.

The suit by three of Gaye’s children cited excerpts of magazine interviews given by Thicke to support their contention that he had admitted to drawing on “Got to Give it Up” when producing and recording “Blurred Lines.”

Thicke sang the raunchy, percussive R&B song, which topped song charts around the world this year and ranked as the biggest U.S. pop hit of the summer, at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards in a provocative performance featuring pop singer Miley Cyrus.

Gaye’s daughter, Nona Marvisa Gaye, and his sons Frankie Christian Gaye and Marvin Gaye III also said in the suit that Thicke’s 2011 song “Love After War” amounted to “unlawful copying” of Gaye’s 1976 song “After the Dance.”

Their lawsuit also named Thicke’s wife, actress Paula Patton, who collaborated with her husband on “Love After War,” along with Interscope Records, Universal Music Group Recordings and Sony/ATV Music, among others.

The suit further accuses EMI, which also happens to manage the copyrights for Gaye’s music, of breach of contract and trust agreements.

The family is seeking damages of up to $ 150,000 per infringement as well as a portion of the profits from the success of “Blurred Lines” and “Love After War.”

U.S. athletes still reluctant to admit head injuries – report [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Susan Heavey

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Many young athletes still do not admit when they have suffered a head injury despite increased awareness about the risks of concussions in children and teenagers, U.S. health advisers said on Wednesday, urging sports leagues and government agencies to take more action.

Various groups have tried to raise awareness about the seriousness of brain injuries, and sports leagues have implemented rule changes aimed at preventing them. Professional leagues, including the National Football League, are also wrestling with the issue amid complaints from some players about long-term impacts on the brain.

But there is still not enough data on how to prevent and treat them, the experts said in an analysis of sports-related concussions in young athletes from the Institute of Medicine and the National Research Council. (Report: http://r.reuters.com/xus34v)

“Despite the increased attention, however, confusion and controversy persist in many areas,” panelists said the report, which was sponsored by several government agencies along with $ 75,000 from the NFL.

Overall, studies show youth concussions occur at higher rates in certain sports, during competition rather than practice and among girls, the 17-member panel concluded.

Most recovery plans call for athletes with concussions to rest, but “current research does not indicate a standard or universal level and duration of rest needed,” panelists added.

In 2009, U.S. hospitals treated 250,000 youth for sports-related concussions and other brain injuries, up from 150,000 in 2001, according to the report, which analyzed all available studies and data on 5- to 21-year-olds.

It was unclear if concussions are on the rise or whether increased awareness had prompted greater diagnoses, the report added. Reporting differences and other factors may also help explain why data show higher rates among girls, it said.

Still, many cases go unreported.

For Hannah Steenhuysen, a high school soccer goalie in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, it was hard to admit she had been hit too hard with a ball and risk missing out on her favorite sport.

“You don’t tell anyone usually when you get a headache because you don’t want to be out of the game,” she said.

Severe headaches from her second concussion last year took her off the team and left her struggling for months to catch up on assignments.

“I couldn’t watch TV or text or even read – it was really tough,” said Steenhuysen. “When I tried to go back to school, I couldn’t keep up and everything got jumbled in my head.”

CURRENT EFFORTS INADEQUATE

Concussions are a mild form of traumatic brain injury that can cause memory problems, headaches, sensitivity to light, among other symptoms. Mood changes are also a worry, and concerns remain about a possible link to mental illness.

The report urged athletic groups and federal health agencies to gather more data overall, calling current efforts “inadequate.”

Some parents have already taken steps on their own.

Bill and Suzanne Watters of Oakland, New Jersey bought their then 14-year-old son a $ 350 helmet after he suffered a concussion last year during a football game.

They disagree over whether their son should return to the field, but he is playing again this season. “He loves the game, and that’s what he wants to do,” his mother said.

The report said it “found little evidence” that helmets, mouthguards or headbands reduce the risk of concussion.

While much of the attention has centered around American football with its fierce body blows and tackling, other sports also carry risks. Bicycle crashes were the leading cause of mild brain injuries among youth, data showed.

Overall, more male athletes in high schools and college report concussions in football, ice hockey, lacrosse, wrestling and soccer, the report said.

Among similarly aged young women, the highest rates of reported concussions were in soccer, lacrosse and basketball.

With the exception of cheerleading, head injuries were most likely to occur during competition, not practice, the report said.

New York City Council votes to raise tobacco purchasing age to 21 [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Curtis Skinner

NEW YORK (Reuters) – The New York City Council voted to raise the minimum age for buying tobacco to 21, the highest in the country, in hopes of reducing smoking among the city’s young adults.

The council voted 35 to 10 on Wednesday to raise the age requirement from 18.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an anti-smoking crusader, was expected to sign the bill, which would become law 180 days later.

Some 19,000 high school students under 18 currently smoke in the city and 80 percent of smokers start before age 21, according to the city’s health department. Youth smoking rates have hovered around 8.5 percent since 2007 after having been cut in half from 2001 to 2006.

“We need the next big thing. And this is the next big thing,” City Councilman James Gennaro, the sponsor of the bill, told reporters about the bill’s intent to further reduce smoking among the city’s youth.

Raising the minimum sales age to 21 would reduce smoking among 14 to 17 year olds by two-thirds and cut rates by a little over half for 18 to 20 year olds, the health department said.

Bloomberg, nearing the end of his third and final term, has made public health a focus of his 12 years in office, starting with a ban on smoking in bars and restaurants in 2002. In 2011 the city banned smoking in outdoor venues such as public parks and beaches. Bloomberg has also targeted fatty foods, salt and sugary drinks in New York City restaurants.

Four states – Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey and Utah – and several municipalities across the country have set the minimum age for buying tobacco products at 19.

While New York would be the first major city to have a sales age as high as 21, the Boston suburb of Needham, Massachusetts, actually led the way in 2005. Between 2006 and 2012, smoking among high school students in Needham fell by more than half, New York City officials said.

U.S. appeals court revives patent fight over AstraZeneca drug [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Jessica Dye

(Reuters) – A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday reinstated part of a legal fight by AstraZeneca over a patent protecting its Pulmicort Respules asthma drug, months after the court temporarily halted competitors from distributing generic versions.

The ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit reverses an earlier decision that generic drugmakers -including Apotex Inc, Sandoz Inc and Watson Laboratories Inc -had not infringed an AstraZeneca patent relating to the drug.

The court left intact a finding that another AstraZeneca patent related to the drug was invalid.

AstraZeneca said in a statement Wednesday that it had “full confidence in the strength of its intellectual property rights” concerning the pediatric asthma drug.

The defendants were not immediately available for comment after regular business hours Wednesday.

AstraZeneca had filed suit earlier this year seeking to block the generic drugmakers from introducing versions of Pulmicort Respules. The defendants countersued, saying that the patents were invalid and that they had not infringed them.

The case went to trial, and in April a federal judge in New Jersey found that one AstraZeneca patent had not been infringed, and that another was invalid. AstraZeneca appealed, and in May the Federal Circuit issued a temporary injunction to block generic versions of the drug from being distributed in the United States.

Defendants Apotex, Watson and Breath Limited had received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the drug, and Sandoz received approval while the appeal was pending, AstraZeneca said in a statement.

None of the manufacturers have launched a generic product in the United States, although AstraZeneca has an agreement with Teva Pharmaceuticals allowing that company to sell a generic version, the company said.

According to a regulatory filing from AstraZeneca, Pulmicort generated $ 866 million in worldwide revenue for AstraZeneca in 2012.

Mosquitoes known to carry dengue, yellow fever seen in California [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Steve Gorman

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A tropical mosquito known to carry dengue and yellow fever has been detected in California, raising concerns among public health officials and prompting intense efforts to prevent the spread of the potentially deadly diseases.

The mosquito, known by the scientific name Aedes aegypti requires little standing water to reproduce.

“This mosquito bites during the day. It’s an aggressive mosquito and that in itself – the nuisance aspect – is going to be huge for people in our areas,” said Steve Mulligan, director of the Consolidated Mosquito Abatement District that encompasses parts of Fresno County.

“It could bring about an impact in our lifestyle. We like to be outdoors in summertime and enjoy our backyards,” he said.

None of the specimens trapped and tested since the mosquito first appeared in California’s Central Valley in June have been found to carry disease, and no illnesses associated with the insect have been reported.

But the tiny insect’s feeding and breeding habits make it a voracious pest, which if allowed to propagate could pose a risk to the nation’s most populous state as an avenue of infection for dengue and yellow fever, public health authorities said.

Native to tropical and subtropical regions, the species has already turned up in Hawaii, Arizona, Texas and parts of the U.S. Southeast, Florida in particular.

“We’re hoping to eradicate this species, but that will be challenging, and we’re certainly interested in whether it can survive the winter months in California,” said Vicki Kramer, chief of vector-borne diseases for the state Department of Public Health.

Vector-control authorities in Fresno, Madera and San Mateo counties, where the mosquito has been identified, are warning residents to empty bird baths, dog dishes, flower pots and other sources of standing water from around their homes.

Homeowners are also advised to keep screens over open windows and doors, to apply repellent when outside and to use mosquito netting over infant cribs, carriers and strollers.

Mosquito abatement districts are using special pesticides in places where aegypti is found, but they need help from the public to pinpoint infestations. They say the biggest telltale sign is being bitten in the daytime.

AGGRESSIVE DAYTIME FEEDER

Most mosquito species that bite people and are common to residential areas of California tend to feed at night. Others that bite during daylight hours are typically found in rural or undeveloped areas only, officials say.

For now, the risk of contracting dengue or yellow fever in California is low, because a mosquito would have to bite an already infected person then bite another person, experts say.

While there have been locally transmitted human cases of dengue reported in Florida this year, and occasional cases in Hawaii and Texas, all 183 cases documented in California since 2010 have been in people infected while traveling in Latin America, Asia or Africa, Kramer said.

Yellow fever in California is even more rare. The last known case was in 1999, she said.

Aedes aegypti is a primary vector for both diseases, and the chances of local transmission rise as the incidence of “imported” human cases grows and the Aedes aegypti mosquito population expands.

Dengue causes high fever, debilitating joint and muscle pain, headaches, vomiting and a skin rash. Yellow fever often begins with flu-like symptoms and can progress to a more severe phase that can lead to jaundice and internal bleeding.

Both can be fatal. Worldwide, some 500,000 people with severe dengue require hospitalization each year, and 2.5 percent of those stricken die, according to the World Health Organization. It estimates the annual number of yellow fever cases worldwide at 200,000, resulting in 30,000 deaths a year.

New security issues surface as Sebelius testifies [ BeritaTerkini ]

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama’s embattled top health official declared herself accountable Wednesday for failures of the much-maligned health insurance website as a newly surfaced government memo pointed to security concerns that were laid out just days before its launch.

Despite the problems, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius defended the health care overhaul, the signature legislative accomplishment of Obama’s first term. She said the website problems will be fixed by Nov. 30 and gaining health insurance will make a positive difference in the lives of millions of Americans.

The website HealthCare.gov was still experiencing outages, even as Sebelius was testifying to the House Energy and Commerce Committee that “I’m responsible.” And she faced a new range of questions about an internal memo from her department that revealed the troubled website was granted a temporary security certificate on Sept. 27, just four days before it went live on Oct. 1.

The memo, obtained by The Associated Press, said incomplete testing created uncertainties that posed a potentially high security risk for the website. It called for a six-month “mitigation” program, including ongoing monitoring and testing.

Republicans opposed to Obama’s health care law are calling for Sebelius to resign. She apologized to people having trouble signing up but told the committee that the technical issues that led to frozen screens and error messages are being cleared up on a daily basis.

Security issues raise major new concerns on top of the long list of technical problems the administration is grappling with.

“You accepted a risk on behalf of every user … that put their personal financial information at risk,” Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., told Sebelius, citing the memo. “Amazon would never do this. ProFlowers would never do this. Kayak would never do this. This is completely an unacceptable level of security.”

Sebelius countered that the system is secure, even though the site’s certificate, known in government parlance as an “authority to operate,” is of a temporary nature. A permanent certificate will be issued only when all security issues are addressed, she stressed.

Spokeswoman Joanne Peters added separately: “When consumers fill out their online … applications, they can trust that the information they’re providing is protected by stringent security standards and that the technology underlying the application process has been tested and is secure. Security testing happens on an ongoing basis using industry best practices.”

The security certificate is required under longstanding federal policy before any government computer system can process, store or transmit agency data. The temporary certificate was approved by Medicare chief Marilyn Tavenner, the senior HHS official closest to the rollout. No major security breaches have been reported.

The memo said, “From a security perspective, the aspects of the system that were not tested due to the ongoing development, exposed a level of uncertainty that can be deemed as a high risk for the (federal marketplace website).”

It recommended setting up a security team to address risks and conduct daily tests, and said a full security test should be conducted within two to three months of the website going live.

A separate page stated that “the mitigation plan does not reduce the risk to the (website) itself going into operation on October 1, 2013. However, the added protections do reduce the risk to the overall Marketplace operations and will ensure that the … system is completely tested within the next 6 months.”

That page was signed by three senior technical officials below Tavenner at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. All the officials deal with information security issues.

Sebelius’ forthright statement about her ultimate accountability for problems with the sign-up rollout came as Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., peppered her with questions about the “debacle.”

“Hold me accountable for the debacle,” Sebelius responded. “I’m responsible.”

Rep. Henry Waxman of California, the ranking Democrat on the committee, scoffed at Republican “oversight” of a law they have repeatedly tried to repeal.

“I would urge my colleagues to stop hyperventilating,” said Waxman. “The problems with HealthCare.gov are unfortunate and we should investigate them, but they will be fixed. And then every American will have, finally have, access to affordable health insurance.”

The website HealthCare.gov was intended to be the online gateway to coverage for millions of uninsured Americans, as well those who already purchase their policies individually. Many people in the latter group will have to get new insurance next year, because their policies do not meet the standards of the new law.

Throughout the 3 ½-hour hearing, Sebelius was respectful, often addressing lawmakers as “sir” or “congresswoman.” She kept her cool as some lawmakers repeatedly cut off her answers. But she did not shy a few times from tersely interjecting her views while a member was speaking.

The standing-room-only hearing room was silent when she swore an oath to tell the truth and began her opening statement.

Addressing consumers who’ve tangled with the confusing system, Sebelius added, “So let me say directly to these Americans, you deserve better. I apologize.”

She parried questions about problems with the website as well as a wave of cancellation notices hitting individuals and small businesses who buy their own insurance. Those notices are coming because many existing individual policies are too skimpy to meet the law’s requirements. The administration says consumers affected will be able to find better coverage.

Lawmakers also wanted to know how many people have enrolled in plans through the health insurance marketplaces. Sebelius stuck with the administration response, promising to release the data in mid-November.

Starting Jan. 1, most Americans will be required to carry health insurance or face fines. At the same time, insurance companies will no longer be able to turn away people in poor health. The law provides subsidized private insurance for middle-class people who don’t get health care on the job. Low-income people can access an expanded version of Medicaid in states that agree to expand that safety net program.

Ariana Grande Channels Shakespeare in ‘Right There’ [ BeritaTerkini ]

In the video for her new single, “Right There,” Ariana Grande filters Romeo and Juliet through the campy lens of a late-Nineties teenage rom-com. Directed by the Young Astronauts (who also helmed the clip for Grande’s “Almost Is Never Enough”), the clip stars Grande stars as “Juliet” opposite her suave “Romeo” love interest, Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Ariana Grande on ‘Yours Truly’ and Miley Cyrus

As in the Shakespeare story, the pair meet at a masquerade party and eventually fall in love. But, since this is a pop music video, there’s also plenty of camp: Throughout, Grande fans herself on a frilly Victorian bed, strikes sassy poses and even ventures into a massive swimming pool for a late-night make-out session. Big Sean, who contributes a guest verse to the track, also shows up, though he’s mainly relegated to the sidelines, playing the role of “The Priest.”

“How can this be wrong when it feels so right?,” Grande sings on the track, channeling the sweetness (and melodic content) of Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby,” backed by skittering programmed snares and piano. With her high vocal range, Grande has garnered Carey comparisons before, and she told Rolling Stone recently that she counts them as “a blessing.”

“When you look at ‘The Way,’ it’s obvious, but I’m not worried about it,” she said. “It’s a massive compliment; she’s the greatest singer in the world, like literally, the Guinness Book of World Records. It’s an incredible compliment but it doesn’t worry me, because when you listen to my album as a whole, you get to know me.”

Grande’s debut, Yours Truly, came out in August, but she’s already working on her follow-up. In the same interview, the singer gave a preview of thenext  album, which she hopes will be “a little bit different.”

“I don’t want it to sound like an extension of Yours Truly,” she said. “I want it to sound like an evolution. I want to explore more sounds and experiment a little bit. I have a bunch of ideas I’m very excited about and a lot of stuff cooking.”

Gimme That! Zoe Saldana’s Edgy Ankle Booties [ BeritaTerkini ]

von

Rose Curiel

| Übersetzt von Rose Curiel

30. Oktober 2013 – 10:24

Marriage definitely agrees with Zoe Saldana!

The newlywed was positively glowing when she and husband, Marco Perego recently hit the streets of Venice Beach, Calif. for a little retail therapy.

While her PDA with her handsome beau undoubtedly contributed to her radiance, so too did her flawless sense of style.

Perfecting the effortlessly chic, not-trying-too-hard style that many of us strive for, Saldana nailed a fabulous fall look with a casual striped-top-and-jeans combo that she toughened up with an edgy leather jacket and badass booties.

NEWS: Is this Zoe Saldana’s wedding ring? See for yourself!

And while we (sadly) can’t have her hunky hubby, at least we can steal her style.

Yep, we found the cool girl Rag & Bone ankle boots she wore while strutting her stuff alongside Perego. We love the Newbury style in Saldana’s versatile black color of choice, but the stylish shoes also come in gray, beige and dark brown for warmer hued fall ensembles.

But no matter what shade you opt for, this is a goes-with-everything footwear find. Just ask Reese Witherspoon, who wore a similar Rag & Bone style last fall, which she paired with everything from flirty dresses to jeans.

We have a feeling we’ll spot Saldana with her booties—and man!—many more times before the season’s over!

Are you a fan of Zoe’s ankle booties?

Top U.S. health official says still confident in healthcare contractor [ BeritaTerkini ]

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Wednesday said she has not lost confidence in Quality Software Services Inc, one of several contractors that helped develop the troubled federal health insurance exchange website.

Last week, the Obama administration announced that QSSI, a unit of health insurer UnitedHealth Group, will serve as a general contractor to oversee repairs to HealthCare.gov.

“I haven’t lost my confidence in them,” Sebelius said at a House of Representatives Energy and Commerce Committee hearing.

Gov’t document: Health site posed security risk [ BeritaTerkini ]

WASHINGTON (AP) — An internal government memo obtained by The Associated Press shows administration officials were concerned that a lack of testing posed a “high” security risk for President Barack Obama’s new health insurance website.

The Sept. 27 memo to Medicare chief Marylin Tavenner said a website contractor wasn’t able to test all the security controls in one complete version of the system.

Insufficient testing “exposed a level of uncertainty that can be deemed as a high risk,” the memo said.

The memo recommended setting up a security team to address risks, conduct daily tests, and a full security test within two to three months of going live.

At a congressional hearing, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said the site’s security certification is temporary, but asserted consumers’ personal information is secure.

Contractor warned health site had limited testing [ BeritaTerkini ]

WASHINGTON (AP) — A major contractor behind the federal health insurance exchange website told the government last month it didn’t have enough time to test its product.

CGI Federal also told the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services in a memo that it couldn’t get access to computer logs that would have pinpointed potential problems. The contractor labeled that issue as “severe” as recently as June, and said a compressed schedule didn’t allow enough time for adequate testing.

The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform asked CGI Federal for the documents last week. It released them to the public late Tuesday.

The HealthCare.gov website is a key part of President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul, but its high-profile failures have marred the site since it launched Oct. 1.

‘Clair De Lune’ (Motez Remix) by Flight Facilities – Free MP3 [ BeritaTerkini ]

Artist: Flight Facilities
Song:  “Clair De Lune” feat. Christine Hoberg (Motez Remix)
Album: Clair De Lune (Single)

“It’s probably no secret that Debussy’s ‘Clair De Lune’ was the inspiration for our ‘Clair De Lune,’” Hugo tells Rolling Stone. “All we really wanted was to make a bed time song that anyone could put on repeat, and eventually become unaware of where it starts or finishes. We’ve always been big advocates for remixes staying true to the original, and Motez made the perfect adjustment to tastefully bring our least club-driven song onto the dance floor.”

Wii U still not a hit with gamers [ BeritaTerkini ]

Nintendo is suffering as sales of its Wii U game console continue to be hit by a shift to gaming on smartphones and tablets.

The video game maker behind Pokemon and Super Mario made a loss in the latest quarter of £50 million, which virtually wiped out a profit from the previous one.

Wii U sales for the quarter nearly doubled to 300,000 from 160,000 in the previous three months, but that is still far short of the company’s goal of nine million units for the fiscal year ending next March.

The company’s business has been shaken in recent years as more people play games on their smartphone and tablets.

So far Nintendo has resisted offering its games on those platforms, but analysts say continued poor performance could force a change in strategy.

The company cut the price of the Wii U console last month.

Nintendo said: “The Wii U hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits owing mainly to its markdown in the United States and Europe.”

Sales are likely to pick up over the year-end holiday season, but the Wii U will face competition from Sony’s new PlayStation 4, due out next month, and Microsoft’s coming Xbox One.

Lenovo took to the stage at a launch event in Milan, parelleled with an event in Los Angeles starring Lenovo’s “new employee” Ashton Kutcher, to introduce a new design of Android tablet.

The “better way” comes down to a rounded edge, which makes the Yoga Tablet a multi-mode device, just like the company’s other Yoga products. In this case, Lenovo is touting three ways of using the tablet: hold mode, tilt mode and finally stand mode.

One glimpse at the tablet will reveal how this is achieved, the rounded edge incorporating a larger battery, promising 18 hours of use, as well as acting as a hinge for the integrated stand.

The “hold mode” was described as being inspired by holding a magazine, echoing the sort of sentiments we heard from Sony at the launch of the Sony Tablet S in 2011, who at the time said it was inspired by a folded newspaper.

Launching on Android 4.2.2, it comes with an interface that’s been slightly tweaked by Lenovo. Internally you’ll find a 1.2GHz MTK quad-core processor with 1GB of RAM. There’s 16GB of internal memory, along with a microSD card slot for expansion, neatly tucked around the back.

On the rear is a 5-megapixel camera, with a front-facing 1.6-megapixel snapper for all your selfies and video calling.

There will be two sizes of Lenovo Yoga Tablet available, an 8-inch model and a 10-inch model, offering the same design and modes of use, but providing two price points: €229 and €299 respectively. Both models offer a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution.

The Lenovo Yoga Tablet will be launching across Europe in November.

Nintendo keeps 2013/14 Wii U sales forecast unchanged at 9 million units [ BeritaTerkini ]

TOKYO (Reuters) – Nintendo Co on Wednesday kept its Wii U game machine sales forecast for the year through March 2014 unchanged at 9 million consoles, about a month after it reduced the console’s price in North America and Europe to better compete with rivals.

The creator of the Super Mario franchise is counting on the new Wii U to revive its fortunes as it faces new hardware releases from Microsoft Corp and Sony Corp.

Nintendo, which began by making playing cards in the late 19th century, also projected its sales of 3DS handheld consoles at 18 million units, unchanged from its previous forecast.

Known for games with characters including “Mario” and “Zelda”, Nintendo is also up against stiff competition from inexpensive or free mobile games on tablets and smartphones.

Hoping to attract new players who have not been able to afford costlier versions of its 3DS, Nintendo this month launched the cheaper 2DS, which has a lower resolution and will play DS and 3DS games in 2D graphics, in North America and Europe.

Sebelius heads to Hill to defend health law, job [ BeritaTerkini ]

WASHINGTON (AP) — Eager to cast blame, lawmakers are preparing to grill President Barack Obama’s top health official over problems with the rollout of the government’s health care website.

A growing number of Republicans in Congress are calling for Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to step down or be fired because of problems consumers are having signing up for insurance coverage on the government’s new website.

On Wednesday, Sebelius heads to Capitol Hill to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee, her first appearance before Congress since state-based health exchanges opened for business on Oct. 1.

Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the top Republican on the Senate Health Committee, on Tuesday joined the list of GOP lawmakers calling for Sebelius to go.

“Taxpayers have spent $ 400 million to create exchanges that, after 3½ years, still don’t work,” Alexander said. “No private-sector chief executive officer would escape accountability after such a poor performance.”

Sebelius is likely to face questions about problems with the website as well as a wave of cancellation notices hitting small businesses and individuals who buy their own insurance. Lawmakers also want to know how many people have enrolled in plans through the health exchanges, a number the Obama administration has so far refused to divulge.

On Tuesday, Medicare chief Marilyn Tavenner was questioned for nearly three hours by members of the House Ways and Means Committee who wanted to know why so many of their constituents were getting cancellation notices from their insurance companies.

“So what happened to the ‘If you like your insurance, you can keep it’ question?” asked Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich., chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

Camp was referring to one of Obama’s earliest promises about the health law: You can keep your plan if you like it. Obama’s promise dates back to June 2009, when Congress was starting to grapple with overhauling the health care system to cover uninsured Americans.

As early as last spring, state insurance commissioners started giving insurers the option of canceling existing individual plans for 2014, because the coverage required under Obama’s law is significantly more robust. Some states directed insurers to issue cancellations. Large employer plans that cover most workers and their families are unlikely to be affected.

The law includes a complicated “grandfathering” system to try to make good on Obama’s pledge. It shields plans from the law’s requirements provided the plans themselves change very little. Insurers say it has proven impractical. The cancellation notices are now reaching policyholders.

Tavenner blamed insurance companies for cancelling the policies and said most people who lose coverage will be able to find better replacement plans in the health insurance exchanges, in some cases for less money. Change is a constant in the individual insurance market, she added, saying that about half of plans “churn” over in any given year.

Tavenner delivered the most direct mea culpa yet from the administration for the technical problems that have kept many Americans from signing up through HealthCare.gov. Consumers complain that the site is slow, locks up and often kicks them off before they can complete their application.

“I want to apologize to you that the website has not worked as well as it should,” she told the Ways and Means Committee.

Tavenner said the website is improving and the problems should be resolved by the end of November, giving consumers time to get coverage by the March 31 deadline.

The first senior official to publicly answer questions from lawmakers, Tavenner was also pressed about the number of people who have so far enrolled in health plans through the exchanges. Committee members asked Tavenner at least 19 times about the number of people who have so far enrolled through the exchanges.

Each time, she gave a well-rehearsed answer: “We will not have those numbers available until mid-November.”
