Nokia unveils new smartphone with 41-megapixel camera

By Sinead Carew

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Nokia on Thursday introduced a new smartphone, the Lumia 1020, with a powerful 41-megapixel camera as it tries to catch up with rivals Samsung Electronics Co Ltd and Apple Inc.

The Finnish mobile phone maker is betting its future in smartphones on Microsoft Corp's Windows Phone operating system as well as on high-tech photography features.

At an event in New York, Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop emphasized the Lumia 1020's advanced optics, which enable sharper images, even when zooming.

"You can literally find a needle in a haystack," Elop said.

The new Lumia, which use Windows software, will be sold through U.S. carrier AT&T Inc starting July 26 for $299.99 with a two-year contract, and will be available later in other markets including China, Nokia said.

Telefonica SA will be its carrier partner in European and Latin American markets, it said.

Elop said Nokia, which has suffered a fall in cash reserves after years of poor sales, said it was pooling resources with AT&T and Microsoft to market the new phone.

Kate Middleton Spikes Maternity Dress Sales

von Cinya Burton 11. Juli 2013 - 09:10

It's a well-known fact that whatever ensemble Kate Middleton wears will sell out—usually in less than 24 hours.

But according to a new reporter by Reuters, the expecting Duchess of Cambridge has an even more widespread impact on the fashion industry than previously thought.

EXCLUSIVE: What Kate will wear when she introduces the royal baby

British department store chain Debenhams has reported a 500 percent rise of smart and pretty maternity wear compared to last summer.

So what exactly does "smart and pretty" mean? Feminine frocks instead of comfy leggings.

"I think you can look incredibly beautiful when you are pregnant. You don't have to just slop around in Juicy Couture and Ugg boots," explained fashion stylist Hannah Teare in the report.

NEWS: How Kate's preparing for the royal baby

Even when moms-to-be aren't buying exactly what Middleton has donned, they are still inspired by her chic, feminine looks.

"I think the Duchess of Cambridge's maternity style has been very true to her. I think it has been very pared down. I think it is very appropriate, clean and modern, but with a sense of youthfulness too, which is right," Amanda Wakeley, a British designer favored by Middleton, told Reuters.

NEWS: Kate's best-selling looks

Kate's accessibility makes her impact that much greater and will only continue to grow as she returns to wearing non-maternity clothing after the birth of the royal baby.

"I think she will continue to be this style icon. I think in fact it will just grow and grow and I think that is really exciting for the whole of the British fashion industry and great viewing for the rest of the world too," Wakeley told Reuters. "There are many chapters yet to come. I don't think her style will change dramatically, I think she will continue...she has quite a strong sense of her own style, as did Diana, Princess of Wales and I think she will just continue to grow within that."

Josh Homme: Arctic Monkeys Album Is a 'Sexy, After-Midnight Record'

Queens of the Stone Age frontman also talks potential '...Like Clockwork' sequel

Josh Homme and Alex Turner have quite the musical friendship brewing. Turner, frontman for English indie-rock band Arctic Monkeys, contributed lyrics and vocals to Queens of the Stone Age's sixth album . . . Like Clockwork, and Homme sings on the Monkeys' upcoming AM.

500 Greatest Albums of All Time: Arctic Monkeys, 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'

Homme spoke to NME about the collaboration last weekend at the Czech Republic's Rock For People festival, calling AM "a really cool, sexy after-midnight record. It's called AM, so I guess that's really obvious. And it's really good." When asked whether the two of them went out dancing in Turner's native Sheffield, Homme said, "No, but I'm OK with that!"

AM is the Arctic Monkeys' fifth album and is due for release on September 9th.

Homme also ruminated on a potential . . . Like Clockwork follow-up. "One of the coolest things about doing this is to surprise people," he said. "It's to come out of nowhere. The music world is almost like just a huge dark backdrop, and you wait for something shiny to come out that you wanna hold onto. And it's gone so quickly." He also noted that he'd prefer to balance out the brooding . . . Like Clockwork with something "much happier."

Flashback: Talking Heads Perform 'Psycho Killer' at CBGB in 1975

Flashback: Talking Heads Perform 'Psycho Killer' at CBGB in 1975

Watch the band perform just five months after their first gig

The Talking Heads were just another young band on the burgeoning CBGB scene in December of 1975 when a tiny camera crew entered the dingy club to capture their brief set. The (then) trio had played their first-ever show that past July as the opening act for the Ramones, and they were fast at work writing material. David Byrne was just 23, but he'd been in and out of bands since his high school days. Check out an early version of "Psycho Killer" here with slightly different lyrics.

This video opens with Sire Records co-founder Seymour Stein recalling how he first encountered the band. "I was standing outside CBGB with Lenny Kaye of the Patti Smith Group when all of a sudden I heard music coming out," he says. "I felt myself just moving more and more until I was inside the door, and I was riveted."

The 100 Best Debut Albums of All Time: 'Talking Heads: 77'

Even though the Talking Heads quickly established themselves as one of the best CBGB bands, their rise was relatively slow. They recorded some demos for CBS in 1975 that were ultimately rejected, and they gigged relentlessly all through 1976, winning over fans one by one. In 1977 they signed with Sire. Their debut single "Love Building on Fire" hit in February of that year, and the next month guitarist Jerry Harrison joined the band.

"Love Building on Fire" didn't make a huge impact, and their second single "Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town" was equally unsuccessful. Finally, in December of 1977," they released "Psycho Killer" as a single. Serial killer David Berkowitz (a.k.a. Son of Sam) terrorized New York that summer, and the track was eerily timely. It was nearly two and a half years since they started playing "Psycho Killer" live, and it just dinged the Billboard Hot 100 at number 92. But it was the start of an amazing run of hits.

Bidders line up for Siemens postal machines unit - sources

By Arno Schuetze

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's Siemens has received tentative offers for the postal automation and baggage-handling division being sold in its effort to streamline operations and shed non-core assets, two sources familiar with the transaction said.

The postal operation, which counts the U.S. Postal Service and Deutsche Post among its customers, has benefited from the growing number of consumers shifting to internet shopping.

The baggage-handling side of the business makes both software to track luggage and mechanical equipment such as conveyor belts. It has installed more than 300 baggage-handling systems at airports all over the world.

German private equity firm Triton and U.S. investment groups Gores and Platinum are among those that have handed in bids for the 300 million euro (255 million pounds) division by the July deadline, the sources said on condition of anonymity.

Siemens, Triton and Citigroup, which is running the auction, declined to comment. Neither Gores nor Platinum were immediately available for comment.

The postal automation and baggage-handling business has annual revenues of about 800 million euros and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of about 60 million euros.

"Interest in the asset has been very robust, although it is not an easy asset," one of the sources said.

One issue for prospective buyers is to line up banks that can fund the debt guarantees that suppliers of the industry's large machinery generally have to provide. These are to cover pre-installation performance guarantees and warranties once the machines have started operating.

The strong credit rating enjoyed by Siemens has meant that the engineering group has provided these at very low cost, said another source familiar with the deal.

A potential buyer would probably have to write a large equity cheque for the postal automation and baggage-handling division - without using large amounts of debt to finance the acquisition - to convince banks to supply the guarantees.

"The transaction could end up in something like a 100 million euros all-equity deal," the source said, adding that the enterprise value of the business is estimated to be about 300 million euros.

The Siemens unit competes with U.S. group Pitney Bowes, Northrop Grumman's French subsidiary Solystic, Japan's NEC, Dutch group Vanderlande and Germany's Beumer.

Michael Jackson 'Frightened Me,' Says Director of His Comeback Shows

Kenny Ortega describes pop star as unhealthy and improperly cared for in the days before his death

Kenny Ortega, the director of Michael Jackson's planned comeback shows, broke down in tears while describing the pop star's faltering condition during the singer's ongoing wrongful death trial, the BBC reports. Just days before Jackson's death in June 2009, Ortega recalled that his appearance was "very, very troubling," adding, "I saw a Michael that frightened me."

Ortega's comments came during his third day of evidence in the current case against AEG Live, the promoter for This Is It, who are being sued by Jackson's mother for up to $40 billion. Katherine Jackson has accused the company of missing the warning signs of her son's failing health during rehearsals and not properly investigating Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter after giving the singer a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol.

100 Greatest Singers: Michael Jackson

While AEG Live has denied any such charges, Ortega's testimony painted a picture of a Jackson who was clearly ill and improperly cared for. The director said during at least four rehearsals, Jackson appeared to be under the influence of some substance, and that his strange behavior often followed visits to the doctor.

During one rehearsal, six days before his death, Ortega remembered Jackson was cold, shivering and uncertain of his surroundings; when the rehearsal ended, Ortega emailed AEG Live's CEO, Randy Phillips, about his condition, urging them to find him proper care and describing the singer as a "lost boy."

Ortega said he had a tense meeting the the following day with Murray and Phillips, during which the doctor insisted Jackson was capable of rehearsing.

The wrongful death suit against AEG has been ongoing since April and is expected to wrap up at the end of July.

Thousands Protest Extreme Anti-Abortion Law in North Carolina

The Republican war on women's rights is expanding, but progressive activists are fighting back

Last week, while most of the country was celebrating the Fourth of July holiday, lawmakers in North Carolina took a bill designed to combat so-called "Sharia law" and, without any notice or warning, transformed it into a massive anti-abortion omnibus bill – one that included every single abortion restriction introduced in the 2013 legislative session. The proposals include restricting insurance coverage for abortion services, excessive restrictions on medication abortions and a host of unnecessary regulations on the state's clinics that would likely force them to close. The bill, known as HB 695, sailed through the chamber's full vote less than 24 hours after it was first proposed – but it sparked a wave of criticism and protest, even among conservatives. Republican Governor Pat McCrory, who pledged as a candidate to leave the state's abortion laws alone, threatened to break with his party and veto the legislation unless it went through "significant" changes. But rather than back down, lawmakers doubled down and, with even less notice and less opportunity for the public to respond, attached a slightly modified version of the restrictions to a motorcycle safety bill. Because that's how democracy works.

North Carolina is just the latest state where conservative lawmakers are making a go-for-broke run on abortion rights. It's a strategy that depends on keeping the public in the dark. So far in 2013, 17 states have passed a total of 43 abortion restrictions.  Like the ones in North Carolina, many of these restrictions passed under political cover of darkness. In Ohio, anti-choice lawmakers attached to their two-year budget provisions that will defund Planned Parenthood clinics, strip funding from rape crisis centers that provide any information about abortion, reallocate funding to religiously affiliated "crisis pregnancy centers" and, most disturbingly, mandate that doctors provide women seeking abortions information about the presence of a "fetal heartbeat" prior to performing the procedure. In Wisconsin, Republican Governor Scott Walker made good use of the 4th of July holiday to quietly sign a host of new abortion restrictions in his state before being stopped, again, by a federal court. And let's not forget Texas, where lawmakers are still trying to ram through abortion restrictions in yet another special session after state senator Wendy Davis and thousands of supporters stopped the last one. The trend is disturbing. As Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, has argued, the greater the restriction, the more willing conservative lawmakers are to cheat to win.

But conservatives may want to re-think that strategy. In North Carolina, like Texas, conservatives' play at restricting abortion access has helped mobilize the state's progressive and Democratic base. Every Monday since April, thousands of North Carolinians have gathered at the State Capitol in Raleigh to protest the direction in which the Republican majority is taking the state. What started out as a few dozen protesters has now ballooned, with over 700 North Carolinians arrested in the last 10 weeks for engaging in acts of civil disobedience at these "Moral Monday" demonstrations. Their issues are wide-ranging, with protesters challenging lawmakers on everything from voting rights to fracking to school vouchers and racial equality. But it wasn't until lawmakers targeted abortion rights that that the protests really took off. Last Monday, in response to the anti-abortion omnibus law, approximately 2,000 protesters flooded the Capitol. At least 64 protesters were arrested in the name of protecting access to abortion. It's worth noting that, like the events in Texas, this is all happening in a red state – a powerful counter-example to those who argue that abortion rights are not a winnable political issue across the country.

Lawmakers in North Carolina have until the end of the current session, which could be as early as next week, to pass these new restrictions. If they can't get them passed, then they will have to wait until at least January to try again. Meanwhile, it's not clear whether Gov. McCrory intends to follow through with his veto threat – or whether right-wing lawmakers have the votes to override it if he does. Either way, a crucial question remains to be answered: Just how far are conservatives willing to go in their attack on abortion rights, and can the moderates in the party stop them?

Morrissey Postpones South American Tour Over Food Poisoning

Singer forced to alter yet more tour dates

Morrissey's South American tour has been postponed after the rocker and his team suffered severe food poisoning, reports Consequence of Sound.

100 Greatest Singers: Morrissey

A concert promoter in Peru said that the 14 canceled dates will be rescheduled in the coming months, and a promoter in Chile has said that the singer has returned to England to be under the care of personal physicians.

This series of cancelations is one of many for Morrissey over the past year. The South American leg of the tour was supposed to be the singer's return to the stage following the cancelation of a North American leg due to "a series of medical mishaps over the past few months including a bleeding ulcer, Barrett's esophagus and double pneumonia."

Microsoft says to streamline around devices, services

(Reuters) - Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said on Thursday he was streamlining the software and media company around devices like phones and game consoles and services in its first major overhaul in five years.

The shakeup of the world's largest software company will result in eight division based on their functions.

Under the reorganization, Kurt DelBene, president of Microsoft Office, will retire, Microsoft said in a statement on its website.

Ballmer said he hoped the new structure would bring products to the market faster and make the company more efficient. The company is trying to entice people to use Microsoft products, like Word and Office, on a variety of devices rather than just personal computers.

Microsoft has been struggling with sharply declining personal computer sales that cut into its software sales as well as a lukewarm reception for its new Windows 8 operating system.

Ballmer, who took over as CEO from co-founder Bill Gates in 2000, said he wants the company to be more like Apple Inc. The maker of the iPhone and iPad has roared past Microsoft in sales and stock market value in the past few years by smoothly melding its devices with online services such as iTunes.

Microsoft's last significant reorganization came in July 2008, when Ballmer split the 'Platforms & Services Division' into three separate units - Windows, Online Services and Server and Tools. The head of the unit, Kevin Johnson, left Microsoft to join Juniper Networks Inc, largely taking the blame for the failed attempt to buy Yahoo Inc.

CPX24 is a scam! Any alternative?

I have an account on CPX24 and I loved it cause it had threshold of $1 (alertpay now Payza). When I reached the amount I tried to withdraw twice and they finally paid.. surprisingly, my balance on CPX24 is now in a deficit and I haven't recieved a single penny from them.

Have removed the ads. Tried to email the admin, but of no response.

Anyone else had the same experience? They just suck

P.S:
Is there any other CPM alternative? I have around 60K unique per month expressions, mostly Asian traffic. I need a netowrk with small payout that allows Payza (Alertpay)

Why Having A Website Is A Complete Waste Of Time

I made this post to inform people, about a subject matter I read earlier today.

A guy was posting on another forum saying that most important asset you have online is your website. The truth of the matter is, That Is Completely Wrong!

When people start out in internet marketing, they believe that their website is their business. Other people, will say it is their product they have made, or are promoting, is their business.

While both of these are important, it is not what makes up your business.

I take it one step further, saying that the most important asset you have online, and what makes up your entire business is...

Customers, which is another word for "Your List."

When you really drill down into online marketing, what makes your business run, is your current prospects.

It is not a website, and it is not a product! It is Customers.

Few months ago a extremely good marketer, Kim Roach lost her website, which was earning her 6-7 figures a year! Luckily since the hacker only took her website, and not her list, she was able to rebuild her business in a couple of weeks.

This was all due to the fact, that she still had her list of customers she engaged with, and sold items too.

So as you start to create your online business, while having a website may not be a complete waste of time, always focus more on your list, and keeping it safe.

This is where all your money will come from, if you treat your prospects well.

I want to buy some domains

me to :) - Do you have other high-PR - rank domains?

If you have - please contact me on prive or send me mail to gattaca2000(@)o2.pl (of course without brackets).

Im looking for domains with PR 5 and higher -mostly .com or .org domains (or other international).

Because i really know SEO techniques - im interested only in domains with stable PR (of course age of domain is also important)

Im not interested in domains with PR lower then 5. PR 4 could be acceptable - but only if PR is "strong" - it can be easily checked even here

http://www.checkpagerank.net/

Its also possible that i will be interested in backlinks from strong high-PR domains (do-follow).

If anybody is going to sell these domains please do contact with me by mail - most preferable domains are .com and .org or .us etc - im not interested in Indian, Chinesee etc domains (reasons are obvious)

One very important issue - everybody knows what kind of domains you have - and i have very specificated target for "high quality" - so please - if you offer something in worse quality - save our time - as i specified what im interested in.

Logo for Dutch Slot Machine Website - $37 - 48 Hours - PayPal

I need a logo for my Dutch slot machine website called NederlandseGokkasten.nl which means Dutch Slot Machines. The logo should illustrate slot machines and I like when the logos look modern and polished.

The colors of the logo should be the same colors that you have in the Dutch flag. If you do not know what color are in the Dutch flag then go to http://images.google.com.

The name of the site also needs to be included in the logo. Do not make the logo to big in height instead use width more because I have more space in the header in width than in height.

The contest ends in 48 hours from now and I will be contacting the winning logo designer immediately over PM and payment will also be done immediately over PayPal. All questions and entries need to be posted in the thread. Do not PM me.

Want to be on page 1 google

I will do that for you! These other people will not!

My name is Alex, and I've been doing SEO for local clients and my own websites for 4 years now. I'm now moving to Digital Point for new clients, and I think you might be a great match for my services.
I see businesses all the time like yours that just want to rank safely for the right keywords without all the stress. You can do this – The problem is there's so much garbage information about SEO available that you'll probably end up wasting a lot of time and money on worthless backlinks. I went through this too with my personal websites when I first got started.

So here's the deal: You could hire someone from India at 5/hr to build crappy worthless backlinks for you all day. Over the next 6 months you might float up a bit in the search engines. -- OR -- You could hire me to build you strong worthwhile backlinks, get you ranked FAST, and start getting new clients to your business within weeks, which will easily pay for my services multiple times over.

Note: I am not a large SEO firm. Large SEO firms hire college graduates who have never ranked their own websites and have no idea what they are doing. Why? Because good SEOs (people like myself) can make more on their own then working with a crappy firm. You'll end up paying more and getting less with a large firm. (

I know you're probably overwhelmed by the large number of proposals – I always am when I hire people on Digital Point. I want to make it 100% safe and easy for you to get the results you want.
That's why I'd like to offer you a free 30-minute consultation which we can do over the phone, skype or Gmail. Absolutely no need to be sure if you're going to choose my proposal.

We can discuss your needs, and if it seems like a good fit with my services. I can show you some of my past results and what I can do for you. We will only proceed if we both agree I can get you the rankings you want.

Global Citizen Festival Books Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer, Kings of Leon

All-star charity show returns to New York's Central Park on September 28th

On September 28th, Stevie Wonder, Alicia Keys, Kings of Leon and John Mayer will headline the second annual Global Citizen Festival in New York's Central Park. The artists are playing without compensation to support eradicating global poverty. "These four headlining artists are willing to play for free because they believe this generation wants to see the end of extreme poverty," explains Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Poverty Project, the organizers of the event along with AEG/Goldenvoice and a host of corporate supporters and altruistic organizers. "They're all committed to that goal – in partnership with tens of thousands of global citizens."

Last fall, Neil Young, Foo Fighters, the Black Keys, John Legend, K'Naan and Band of Horses inaugurated the first edition of the Global Citizen Festival, which took place in front of over 60,000 concertgoers on Central Park's iconic Great Lawn, which will also host this year's event. The Global Citizen Festival was timed to coincide with the meeting of the annual United Nations General Assembly Meeting, which had convened to consider its members' actions and goals on behalf of reducing worldwide poverty – putting pressure on world leaders via a media spotlight while at the same time raising money and awareness for the cause. The results transcended expectations: over $1.3 billion in funding to fight poverty worldwide was announced onstage. As well, awareness over poverty issues reached record highs. The event resulted in over two billion media impressions, with 800 million views across social-media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram alone. The millions of viewers who followed the event on television and online turned the Global Citizen Festival into the biggest syndicated music charity broadcast ever. "That's never happened before in the movement to end extreme poverty," Evans says. "It brought the issues straight into the mainstream."

Despite that success, the return of the Global Citizen Festival wasn't certain, according to Evans. "At the end, we were exhausted," Evans admits. The prospect of a second edition, however, came up while Evans was developing another charity/awareness project with Pearl Jam managers Kelly Curtis and Michele Anthony: the Global Citizens Ticket Initiative, in which numerous artists from Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam and Neil Young to Bruno Mars and Beyoncé have agreed to donate two tickets from each concert they play, distributed via the Global Poverty Project's Global Citizen website as direct rewards for supporting various causes.

As Evans held committee meetings with high-profile managers, artists, and music industry executives around the Global Citizens Ticket Initiative this past February, the possibility of a second Global Citizen Festival kept coming up.  "One of the managers asked, 'Are you going to do another Central Park show again?" Evans recalls. "Then [CAA booking agent] Rob Light said, 'Stevie Wonder would love to do it.'" According to Global Citizen co-founder and executive producer Ryan Gall, "Getting interest from Stevie really kicked it into gear." "Then [Mick Management's] Michael McDonald said John Mayer would want to play,' [Vector Management's] Andy Mendelsohn said Kings of Leon would definitely want to be involved, and [Red Light Management's] Will Botwin said Alicia Keys would love to be one of the headliners," Evans adds.

"About five minutes into meeting Hugh, I realized that what he was doing with Global Poverty Project was something different and real," says McDonald. "There are few people who can change the world, and he's one of them. I immediately offered support for whatever they needed."

Many artists have released statements in support of their upcoming appearance at the Global Citizen Festival, which is once again scheduled to coincide with the influx of world leaders and policy makers that takes place during the United Nations General Assembly. "We're happy to take part in an amazing organization's show that brings awareness to such an important global issue," Kings of Leon said in a joint statement.

"I'm so proud to join these incredible artists as we come together through our music in support of The Global Poverty Project," said Alicia Keys. "The number of people around the world living in extreme poverty is staggering. They are humanity's most vulnerable, and as global citizens, we must work to be their voice so that they can live with the same human rights we are privileged to have."

"What the Global Poverty Project and its Global Citizen movement have accomplished in just five years is really inspiring," wrote John Mayer. "Their mission to end extreme poverty is one that we can all agree on, all support. I'm excited to be part of this year's program, alongside musicians I admire and working to end extreme poverty within a generation."

According to McDonald, what attracted him and Mayer was the festival's unique ticketing system established around the original event: Other than a small number of VIP tickets which will be put on sale, the only way to acquire admission to the Global Citizen Festival is to take actions and support a variety of causes dedicated to eradicating world poverty via the Global Poverty Project's GlobalCitizen website. Once a certain threshold is attained, contestants are then entered into a lottery for the approximately 54,000 tickets to be distributed. "It's a novel concept – do something good for the world to get a ticket," McDonald notes. "You're doing something which gives you personal satisfaction, and then you get to go to a show you want to go to."

While the innovative ticketing system for this year's Global Citizen Festival remains, Evans and Gall both point out that much about the 2013 edition has been revamped – from the apps designed to communicate concertgoers' concerns to world leaders, to a more strategic focus on specific issues impacting global poverty concerns. "This year, we're focusing on four key issues for maximum impact – education, women's equality, health, and global partnership – all of which are interrelated," Evans says. "32 million girls remain without education in the developing world; one in five children globally don't get most modern vaccines. The only way to think about these problems is through worldwide solutions from global citizens."

One way to do that, Evans says, is to use technology to grow an ever-expanding worldwide audience beyond the thousands collected in Central Park. "We're exploring making the festival truly global by having live sites around the world broadcasting the event and local artists performing," he says. For Gall, the festival's increasing profile and annual presence serves as an ideal extension of the consciousness-raising possibilities offered by large-scale music gatherings that span from Woodstock to Coachella. "I've loved music festivals my entire life – I'm obsessed with what people like Bill Graham and Michael Lang were able to achieve," Gall says. "Now we get to weave in the latest technological innovations to spread the message and get people involved. When I met [Goldenvoice/Coachella director/promoter] Bill Fold, I told him I'd been to every single Coachella, and how impactful it was for me. That was a big part of our inspiration, and we want to keep making this event bigger and better until we get extreme poverty down to zero."

Randy Travis Has Emergency Surgery After Stroke in Hospital

Country star is critically ill with heart failure

After being hospitalized for congestive heart failure earlier this week, country star Randy Travis underwent emergency surgery yesterday to relieve pressure on his brain after suffering a stroke. The 54-year-old singer remains in critical condition after being hospitalized near Dallas with viral cardiomyopathy, a condition that weakens and enlarges the heart.

Travis, who has notched 16 Number One country hits, was a key figure in country music's neotraidtionalist movement in the Eighties. The six-time Grammy Award winner has also worked as an actor, in movies such as The Rainmaker and on several episodes of the TV series Touched By an Angel. Last year he made headlines after being arrested for driving while intoxicated; in recent months he had been focused on his return to health.

Travis' publicist said on Tuesday that the singer had undergone a procedure to place a device in his heart to help it pump blood on its own. The singer's family and friends have requested prayers and well-wishes from fans.

Funk group unveil old recording of Jim and Jean track

Sly and the Family Stone are celebrating their career – and Sly Stone's 70th birthday – with the new anthology collection Higher!, out August 27th. To mark the release, the influential funk group dug deep into their vaults for mono single masters and old, rare recordings. Here, you can get an exclusive listen to Sly and the Family Stone's take on the track "What's That Got to Do With Me," originally by Jim and Jean.

Best Summer Songs of All Time: Sly and the Family Stone, 'Hot Fun in the Summertime'

"What's That Got to Do With Me" was originally released in February 1967; that July, Sly and the Family Stone were hard at work recording their debut, A Whole New Thing. Stone simply enjoyed the track, and the band set out to work on their own version. Jim and Jean's original featured gentle piano tickles and sweetly swinging drums, but the funk and soul masters inject excited energy into the track with wailing horns and soaring harmonies.

Higher!  features 77 tracks – 18 of which are previously unreleased – that span four CDs, as well as an illustrated 100 page book.
