Sarah Palin tells Iowa conservatives it’s time ‘to stiffen our backs’ [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Kay Henderson

DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) – Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who rallied members of the Tea Party in their failed effort to defund Obamacare, lashed out on Saturday against members of the Republican Party who agreed to end the government shutdown.

The 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee’s comments during a speech in Des Moines come at a time of division within the party over the strategy conservative members of Congress adopted in forcing a 16-day shutdown of the federal government last month.

Polls have shown voters blamed Republicans for the shutdown.

Palin, who was speaking to hundreds of attendees at the Iowa Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual fall banquet, was joined by Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah. Lee, along with fellow Tea Party movement star Senator Ted Cruz, was instrumental in the ill-fated attempt to defund Obamacare, the popular name for the healthcare reform law championed by President Barack Obama.

Palin told the Christian conservatives in attendance it was time to “stiffen our spines” for the 2014 elections.

“I want to encourage you to make your voice heard, to hold politicians accountable,” Palin said.

The bulk of Palin’s speech was focused on the nation’s current political climate. She drew thunderous applause with her sharp attack on Republicans in Congress who voted in October to raise the nation’s debt ceiling and reopen the government.

“They promised that they would do everything in their power to fight against socialized medicine, against Obamacare, but when it came time to stand and defund it, they waved the white flag of surrender and they threw under the bus the good guys who did stand up and fight for us,” Palin said.

Palin named Lee and Cruz as leaders in that fight. Last month, Cruz also made a stop in Iowa, a key state in presidential campaigns because the Iowa caucuses are the first electoral event in the nominating process.

In 2010 Lee defeated three-term Republican Senator Bob Bennett in a primary on his way to winning the Senate seat.

In his speech on Saturday, he called on Republicans to offer up “market-based alternatives” that could replace Obamacare if the Republicans hope to have success at the polls in 2014.

“Frustration is not a platform. Anger is not an agenda and outrage, as a habit, is not even conservative,” Lee said.

Don’t Stress Your Pets Out! [ BeritaTerkini ]

Pets lead a life of luxury. They can sleep all day, don't have to work, and can get room service no matter where they are. But sometimes these pampered pets can get sick of it all and just want to work a little. Lack of exercise, loneliness, jealousy, and being contained can contribute to a cat or dog feeling a little anxious and stressed out. Ever notice your dog acting a little down in the dumps during vacation? Your pet's life isn't all play and no work, and with changes in his environment as well as insufficient releases of energy, his day can be just as stressful as yours.

Carole Wilbourn, a cat therapist, said that depending on how sensitive and emotionally thin-skinned an animal is it can respond to stress in different ways. "Cats, dogs, and other companion animals are affected by people's body language and voice," Wilbourn said.

Symptoms of a pet being stressed out are very similar to that of humans.

It's crazy talk when a human has a conversation with herself, but when a dog barks at absolutely nothing, it's ignored. However, this is one sign of a stressed out pup. Whether yelping at animals out of hostility, or just woofing at nothing, this could be cause for concern. Talking back to your pet can stimulate their minds and calm them down a bit.

Nail biting is a very common and addicting habit that is done by many people as well as animals. But pets get the raw end of the deal as they sometimes struggle biting up their legs.

Staring into nothing, asleep with eyes wide open, is one way to detach from the world without going some place better. Like us, when pets don't have any excitement in their lives, they tend to stare at their shadows imagining a life filled with more Frisbee fetch games and walks in the park.

After an entire day of relaxing, you still find it difficult to get motivated to do something – anything. It's never an opportune time to tackle a heavy workload if you're not feeling up to par and are overwhelmed. Stress levels break down the immune system in people and their pets. Excessive drooling and vomiting can be a sign that your pet has way too much, or way too little on his plate.

Okay, so this isn't a normal symptom of human stress, but a cat who misses the litter box, or simply forgets that's what it's there for, can be feeling a little purr-plexed.

Luckily, if you feel that your tail is between your legs there are antidotes created to help balance your pet's mood. Anti-depressants are on the market for those less than playful and sulking four-legged creatures we call friends. A Japanese company, Medical Life Care Giken, has also created a patch to measure the amount of stress our pets are experiencing. It is applied to the animals paw pad and detects the amount of sweat released, which is directly related to how they feel.

If supplements and patches aren't the perfect solution for your  pooch, Wilbourn suggests, "Make sure their diet is healthy and they get regular check ups; make sure the litter box is in good shape. Soft music can help as well as aromatherapy because lavender is soothing and healing. Also, spend more time playing with them throughout the day."

Abercrombie & Fitch to Design Plus-Size Clothing Collection [ BeritaTerkini ]

8. November 2013 – 12:24

Looks like Abercrombie & Fitch is turning a new leaf.

The mall retailer, which made headlines earlier this year when the brand’s CEO was under fire for declaring their core customers should be the attractive ‘cool kids’, thus, alienating a pretty sizable demographic of shoppers, has just announced that they will be launching a plus-size line in the coming months.

Given the controversy earlier this year, it’s pretty shocking, to say the least, and we’re guessing that this decision was made more in desperation than anything else.

NEWS: Lululemon founder says yoga pants “don’t work” on all women’s bodies

It’s no secret that Abercrombie & Fitch has fallen off the grid in terms of hot shopping spots these days, especially when brands like Forever 21, American Eagle and ASOS have all expanded their lines to accommodate a range of body shapes.

Not only do these savvy merchants churn out trendier options, but they also come at an affordable price, inspiring shoppers to embrace their personal style and mix and match to find styles that speak to their individual tastes.

After all, we have to admit—Abercrombie’s distressed low-rise  jeans, shrunken polos and fitted hoodies emblazoned with their logos aren’t exactly on our wish lists anymore.

You snooze, you lose, right?

NEWS: Lululemon shuns plus-size customers, plus other fashion scandals

And finally in light of this news, we think it’ll be fascinating to see what exactly the brand produces for those larger than a size 10; and we’re even more intrigued how shoppers will respond to the collection.

Plus-size denim mini skirts? Plaid button down shirts? Flimsy cotton camisoles?

This will be interesting, indeed!

Herbal Supplements Are Often Not What They Seem – New York Times [ BeritaTerkini ]

Not-So-Herbal Supplements:
A study using DNA testing offers perhaps the most credible evidence to date of adulteration, contamination and mislabeling in the herbal supplement industry.

Americans spend an estimated $ 5 billion a year on unproven herbal supplements that promise everything from fighting off colds to curbing hot flashes and boosting memory. But now there is a new reason for supplement buyers to beware: DNA tests show that many pills labeled as healing herbs are little more than powdered rice and weeds.

Using a test called DNA barcoding, a kind of genetic fingerprinting that has also been used to help uncover labeling fraud in the commercial seafood industry, Canadian researchers tested 44 bottles of popular supplements sold by 12 companies. They found that many were not what they claimed to be, and that pills labeled as popular herbs were often diluted — or replaced entirely — by cheap fillers like soybean, wheat and rice.

Consumer advocates and scientists say the research provides more evidence that the herbal supplement industry is riddled with questionable practices. Industry representatives argue that any problems are not widespread.

For the study, the researchers selected popular medicinal herbs, and then randomly bought different brands of those products from stores and outlets in Canada and the United States. To avoid singling out any company, they did not disclose any product names.

Among their findings were bottles of echinacea supplements, used by millions of Americans to prevent and treat colds, that contained ground up bitter weed, Parthenium hysterophorus, an invasive plant found in India and Australia that has been linked to rashes, nausea and flatulence.

Two bottles labeled as St. John's wort, which studies have shown may treat mild depression, contained none of the medicinal herb. Instead, the pills in one bottle were made of nothing but rice, and another bottle contained only Alexandrian senna, an Egyptian yellow shrub that is a powerful laxative. Gingko biloba supplements, promoted as memory enhancers, were mixed with fillers and black walnut, a potentially deadly hazard for people with nut allergies.

Of 44 herbal supplements tested, one-third showed outright substitution, meaning there was no trace of the plant advertised on the bottle — only another plant in its place.

Many were adulterated with ingredients not listed on the label, like rice, soybean and wheat, which are used as fillers.

In some cases, these fillers were the only plant detected in the bottle — a health concern for people with allergies or those seeking gluten-free products, said the study's lead author, Steven G. Newmaster, a biology professor and botanical director of the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario at the University of Guelph.

The findings, published in the journal BMC Medicine, follow a number of smaller studies conducted in recent years that have suggested a sizable percentage of herbal products are not what they purport to be. But because the latest findings are backed by DNA testing, they offer perhaps the most credible evidence to date of adulteration, contamination and mislabeling in the medicinal supplement industry, a rapidly growing area of alternative medicine that includes an estimated 29,000 herbal products and substances sold throughout North America.

"This suggests that the problems are widespread and that quality control for many companies, whether through ignorance, incompetence or dishonesty, is unacceptable," said David Schardt, a senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an advocacy group. "Given these results, it's hard to recommend any herbal supplements to consumers."

Representatives of the supplement industry said that while mislabeling of supplements was a legitimate concern, they did not believe it reached the extent suggested by the new research.

Stefan Gafner, the chief science officer at the American Botanical Council, a nonprofit group that promotes the use of herbal supplements, said the study was flawed, in part because the bar-coding technology it used could not always identify herbs that have been purified and highly processed.

"Over all, I would agree that quality control is an issue in the herbal industry," Dr. Gafner said. "But I think that what's represented here is overblown. I don't think it's as bad as it looks according to this study."

The Food and Drug Administration has used bar-coding technology to warn and in some cases prosecute sellers of seafood found to be "misbranded." The DNA technique has also been used in studies of herbal teas, which showed that a significant percentage contain herbs and ingredients that are not listed on their labels.

But policing the supplement industry is a special challenge. The F.D.A. requires that companies test the products they sell to make sure that they are safe. But the system essentially operates on the honor code. Unlike prescription drugs, supplements are generally considered safe until proved otherwise.

Under a 1994 law, they can be sold and marketed with little regulatory oversight, and they are pulled from shelves generally only after complaints of serious injury. The F.D.A. audits a small number of companies, but even industry representatives say more oversight is needed.

"The regulations are very appropriate and rigorous," said Duffy MacKay of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a supplement industry trade group. "But we need a strong regulator enforcing the full force of the law. F.D.A. resources are limited, and therefore enforcement has not historically been as rigorous as it could be."

Shelly Burgess, a spokeswoman for the F.D.A., said that companies were required to adhere to a set of good manufacturing practices designed to prevent adulteration, but that many were ignoring the rules.

"Unfortunately, we are seeing a very high percentage — approximately 70 percent — of firms' noncompliance," she said, "and we are very active in taking enforcement actions against such violations."

DNA bar coding was developed about a decade ago at the University of Guelph. Instead of sequencing entire genomes, scientists realized that they could examine genes from a standardized region of every genome to identify species of plants and animals. These short sequences can be quickly analyzed — much like the bar codes on the items at a supermarket — and compared with others in an electronic database. An electronic reference library at Guelph, called the International Barcode of Life Project, contains over 2.6 million bar code records for almost 200,000 species of plants and animals.

The testing technique is not foolproof. It can identify the substances in a supplement, but it cannot determine their potency. And because the technology relies on the detection of DNA, it may not be able to identify concentrated chemical extracts that do not contain genetic material, or products in which the material has been destroyed by heat and processing.

But Dr. Newmaster emphasized that only powders and pills were used in the new research, not extracts. In addition, the DNA testing nearly always detected some plant material in the samples — just not always the plant or herb named on the label.

Some of the adulteration problems may be inadvertent. Cross-contamination can occur in fields where different plants are grown side by side and picked at the same time, or in factories where the herbs are packaged. Dr. Gafner of the American Botanical Council said that rice, starch and other compounds were sometimes added during processing to keep powdered herbs from clumping, just as kernels of rice are added to salt shakers.

But that does not explain many of the DNA results. For instance, the study found that one product advertised as black cohosh — a North American plant and popular remedy for hot flashes and other menopause symptoms — actually contained a related Asian plant, Actaea asiatica, that can be toxic to humans.

Those findings mirror a similar study of black cohosh supplements conducted at Stony Brook University medical center last year. Dr. David A. Baker, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive medicine, bought 36 black cohosh supplements from online and chain stores. Bar coding tests showed that a quarter of them were not black cohosh, but instead contained an ornamental plant from China.

Dr. Baker called the state of supplement regulation "the Wild West," and said most consumers had no idea how few safeguards were in place. "If you had a child who was sick and three out of 10 penicillin pills were fake, everybody would be up in arms," Dr. Baker said. "But it's O.K. to buy a supplement where three out of 10 pills are fake. I don't understand it. Why does this industry get away with that?"

Herbal Supplements: Are You Getting What You Pay For? – Care2.com [ BeritaTerkini ]

A controversial new study published in the journal BMC Medicine found that one-third of 44 herbal supplements tested showed no detectable amounts of the plant advertised on the bottle. The researchers used DNA barcoding, a type of genetic fingerprinting, to determine the contents of the herbal supplements manufactured from 12 companies representing 30 herb species and selected from Canadian and American stores. Big newspapers like The New York Times immediately published an article based on the study’s results called “Herbal Supplements are Often Not What They Seem.” But perhaps the article’s title should have been “14 Out of 44 Herbal Supplements Tested in One Study are Not What They Seem.”

According to the researchers they were able to authenticate almost half of the products—meaning the products contained exactly what was listed on the label in 48 percent of the product samples. In one-third of the products, ingredients not listed on the label were found in the product. The researchers refer to these ingredients as “contaminants and/or fillers.”

After reading the study I was surprised that the sample size was so small and that the New York Times made rather broad statements based on such a small sample. They even indicated that “many” of the products were adulterated with ingredients not listed on the label. Now, I’m not impressed by companies adding fillers to their products in any way but I don’t even think “many” herbal products were tested in this study so it would be impossible to state that “many” were adulterated.

When I tracked down the original study I was also surprised to discover it read more like a promotion for the DNA barcoding technology used and even went as far as to conclude that this technology should be used in herbal products regulation. I was curious because I read a lot of studies and rarely come across ones that read like product placements or advertisements for the technology used. When I checked the patents database on DNA barcoding technology I noticed that the University of Guelph is a co-applicant for the patent on “DNA barcode sequence classification”—the technology being promoted in this study.

The following statement constitutes part of the study’s “scientific” conclusions:

“We suggest that the herbal industry should embrace DNA barcoding for authenticating herbal products through testing of raw materials used in manufacturing products. The use of an SRM DNA herbal barcode library for testing bulk materials could provide a method for ‘best practices? in the manufacturing of herbal products.”

Apparently I’m not the only one worried about the study’s results.  According to Stefan Gafner, Chief Science Officer at the American Botanical Council, an independent non-profit organization that provides science-based and traditional information to promote the responsible use of herbal medicine, the study was flawed.  In the same New York Times article he indicated that it was flawed because the bar-coding technology could not always identify herbs that have been purified and processed.

As some background when specific extracts are derived from plants (as in the case of curcumin extracted from the herb turmeric), the herb may undergo processing to allow the extraction process.

He added that “Over all, I would agree that quality control is an issue in the herbal industry. But I think that what’s represented here is overblown. I don’t think it’s as bad as it looks according to this study.”

What You Can Do to Ensure Quality Herbal Products:

Remember that herbs were the primary medicine of humans for thousands of years. A study of 44 products from 12 companies is too small to rely on for valuable herbal recommendations.

Choose high quality products or raw herbal materials from a reputable company. These products can safely and easily be made into teas or other natural medicines.

Work with a qualified health practitioner knowledgeable in the field of herbal medicine.

Grow your own herbal medicines. While it is not possible with all herbs, many common herbs can be grown on a windowsill and used whenever needed, especially for herbal teas.  It is much easier to identify the herb when it is still a full plant than when it has been dried, crushed, and added to capsules.

Scaled-down operations as a result of the sale of non-core assets in Europe and Latin America to help meet that target were another reason for falling revenue. Many herbal products mislabeled, contain allergens as fillers – Ars Technica [ BeritaTerkini ]

Flickr user SuperFantastic

Many modern medicines are derived from plant products, with the active chemical components having been identified and made synthetically. But there are plenty of plants that have (or are thought to have) medicinal properties that haven't been turned into pharmaceuticals. That fact, along with a misguided sense that "natural" probably means "better," has helped turn herbal remedies and supplements into a multi-billion dollar business.

Unlike the strict regulatory oversight faced by the pharmaceutical industry, however, herbal products are a bit of a Wild West. Those selling them are simply forbidden from making specific medical claims. In light of that, a group of Canadian researchers have now confirmed that the results are exactly what one might expect: mislabeled products, lots of filler, and plant material that can be allergenic or cause reactions that can threaten health.

The researchers relied on a technique called DNA barcoding, which relies on finding genes that are highly conserved through evolution so that every organism has a copy that will be nearly identical. This technique enables the design of DNA primers that will allow the sequence to be amplified from just about any species out there. Sets of primers for plants, animals, fungi, etc. have all been designed.

If a gene is completely identical, however, these primers would simply amplify the same sequence from every species. So researchers have identified genes that have highly conserved sequences that flank a region where variability is tolerated, which lets the primers work regardless of the species but ensures that they amplify something that's going to vary from species to species. This variable sequence is the barcode—when you find it, you can use it to look up the species.

The challenge with herbal products is that last step: looking up the species. For that to be successful, someone has to have previously matched the sequence to a species. For most herbs, that's not likely to have been done. Even when a barcode is available in a public database, there's no guarantee that the plant was identified by someone who can recognize the often subtle differences between a species of plant and its close relatives.

To deal with this issue, the authors worked with experts from a botanic garden, which helped them identify 100 species used in herbal products to barcode. They then went out and bought 44 different herbal products and compared them with their barcode database.

The results did not look good for the producers. Of the dozen companies that produced what the authors tested, only two managed to make something that contained the herb that was promised and lacked fillers or other plant material. In three cases, the herbal products contained species that the authors were unable to identify. Sixty percent of the products contained plants that weren't listed on the product information, while in 10 percent of the samples, the only plant matter detected came from rice or wheat, meaning that the pills were simply filler.

Filler might not seem like much of a problem, but the authors note that wheat allergies exist and could potentially cause problems for people who are trying to stay gluten-free.

Most problematic, however, is the finding that manufacturers were substituting something else for the advertised herbal contents. "We found contamination in several products with plants that have known toxicity, side effects, and/or negatively interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications," the authors note. In one case, St. John's Wort was replaced by an herb that is touted as a laxative. In another, the promised herb was replaced by one that has "negative side effects such as swelling and numbness of the mouth, oral ulcers, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and flatulence."

The authors don't name any names—presumably, they and/or the journal don't want to mix it up with the herbal industry based on a small and preliminary survey. But the authors are expanding their barcode library to include more herbal species, so there's a reasonable chance that they will be back for more.

Even in its preliminary form, the study indicates that herbal products should be approached with extreme caution. Unfortunately, about the only legal risk these manufacturers are likely to face in the US is one based on their false advertising. Given the producers' economic clout and the general anti-regulatory mood in Washington, that situation is unlikely to change. In the absence of regulation, the best we can hope for is a public awareness campaign, and the extensive coverage received by the paper is effectively just that.

Top 10 affordable ski chalets in Europe [ BeritaTerkini ]

Edelweiss

Edelweiss Ski Chalet, Austria.

Edelweiss Ski Chalet, Zell am See, Austria

In August, Ingrid and Anthony Beardmore, and their two children, packed up their belongings in Derbyshire and moved to the Austrian Alps. They bought a large house in the village of Uttendorf, which they’ve transformed into a B&B chalet. Opening on 1 December, it has four bedrooms – think pale grey walls, cream bed throws and orchids – a children’s corner, with a Nintendo Wii and board games, and a spa treatment room (Ingrid is a trained beauty therapist). Within 15 minutes (driving) you can reach the skiing at Zell am See, Kitzbühel, Kaprun and Kitzsteinhorn.

Hotel Chalet Dolomites, Alpe di Siusi, Italy

This new ski-in/ski-out chalet is located on the slopes of Alpe di Siusi and reached by cable car. It opens on 19 December and has 14 bedrooms, all with a balcony or terrace, and a spa with a sauna and steam room for kicking back after a day on the mountain. Alpe di Siusi, on the “sunny side” of the Dolomites (around 300 days of sunshine a year), has 60km of groomed slopes – almost double that of Courmayeur – and there is a cross-country track just five minutes’ walk from the chalet.

Hotel Spitzhorn, Gstaad, Switzerland

Spitzhorn

Once exclusively the playground of the glitterati, Gstaad still has a full house of five-star hotels, but it’s trying to shake off its “cash-rich” reputation with the introduction of some more affordable accommodation. Opening in December, the 50-room Hotel Spitzhorn in Saanen-Gstaad has been rebuilt with an eco-friendly focus: solar panels heat the water in your plush bathroom and in the spa (featuring an indoor pool, steam bath and Kneipp water-treading basin), while an electric shuttle takes you to the slopes. The small village is a five-minute drive (or 25-minute walk) from the centre of Gstaad, where the regional lift pass covers 250km of slopes.

Refuge du Christ, Méribel, France

Chalets don’t get more “away from it all” than this one, accessible via a one-hour walk, or snowshoe, from Le Villard in Méribel Les Allues. New for this winter, it was designed to be entirely self-sufficient in energy – a wood pellet-fired boiler provides heating, solar panels provide electricity and rainwater supplies the toilets. It sleeps 13 people in two simple but airy dormitories and two double bedrooms, and the windows offer views of Mont Blanc, Grande Casse and Mont Vallon. Hike to find untracked powder, or walk/snowshoe to Le Villard and catch the ski bus to the lifts of Méribel.

This house in Ayas, a few kilometres from Champoluc, was built by the owners’ grandfather, who emigrated from America in the 50s. Following two years of renovations, it is opening this winter as a B&B with six simple but spacious en suite bedrooms, some of which have views of the Monte Rosa massif. Take the shuttle bus to the lifts of Champoluc, part of the Monterosa ski area, which is home to the most underrated skiing in the Alps – both on-piste and off. If the kids still have excess energy at the end of the day, let them loose in Villa Americana’s huge garden.
+39 0125 941070, bbvillaamericana.com. Doubles from €70 per nightroom only, B&B

Myrkdalen Hotel, Voss, Norway

Opened last winter, this hotel ticks all the right boxes: smart bedrooms (the biggest suite has beds for 10 guests) that mix funky fabrics with old black-and-white photos of Myrkdalen folk; three restaurants, including one that serves Swiss-style fondue, and it is right on the slopes of the Myrkdalen Mountain Resort (a new six-seater chairlift, opening in December, will double the capacity of the resort). Voss, the largest ski resort in western Norway, is just a short drive away, and the hotel runs free ski shuttles there.

Fairhotel Hochfilzen, Hochfilzen, Austria

Fairhotel Hochfilzen

The Austrian Tyrol’s first “passive energy” hotel opens this month. In the Pillersee valley, the Fairhotel Hochfilzen is built of sustainable timber and has solar-powered heating. There are 32 rooms, with big beds boasting Tempur mattresses and smart en suite bathrooms, while breakfast is a spread of organic farm-fresh produce. There is a vast network of cross-country trails on the doorstep (the hotel offers equipment rental and lessons), and the nearby ski resorts of Fieberbrunn, Pillersee and Leogang are accessible using the free ski bus.

Hôtel Les Cimes, Le Grand-Bornand, Chinaillon, France

Here’s one for weekend jet-setters. Les Cimes is located in the centre of Le Grand-Bornand, just a holdall’s throw from the slopes and under an hour’s drive from Geneva airport. Each of its 10 bedrooms and suites has been newly renovated in classic Savoyard style: lots of wood, checked fabric, fur throws and heavy antiques. It also has a new spa with a hammam, steam room and sauna – perfect for thawing out after a day exploring the area’s 220km of ski terrain and extensive network of cross-country ski tracks.
+33 450 27 00 38, hotel-les-cimes.com. Doubles from €99, room only

La Luge, Cervinia, Italy

La Luge

Tough as it is to find budget accommodation in Zermatt, over the border in Cervinia there are some great-value places to stay, with a new addition this winter in the form of La Luge. Located just outside Cervinia (there is a private ski bus for guests), it has five rooms decorated in classic Italian alpine style: pine floors, walls and ceilings, big beds. There’s also a sauna for warming your cockles after a day on the hill: Cervinia has some of the finest red-rated pistes in the Alps, including the 8km-long Ventina run.
+39 0166 948 758, lovevda.it. Doubles from €90 per night, B&B

L’Ours Blanc, Les Deux Alpes, France

Here’s one for skiers looking to live on baguettes and Beaufort all week (ie, self-catering), but who still want something with a bit of style. Renovated from top to bottom, L’Ours Blanc has 66 apartments sleeping between two and six, furnished with dark-wood floors, funky lighting and sleek, fully equipped kitchens. There’s an indoor pool and on-site spa, though it’s likely you’ll spend most of your time on the slopes: L’Ours Blanc is 100m from the Diable chairlift, from where you can access the resort’s many powder-filled gullies.

Washington state Senate passes tax breaks, aiming to win Boeing work [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Jonathan Kaminsky

OLYMPIA, Washington (Reuters) – The Washington state Senate on Saturday passed a measure to extend nearly $ 9 billion in tax breaks for Boeing through 2040 in an embattled effort to entice the company to locate production of its newest jet, the 777X, in the Seattle area.

Lawmakers acknowledged, however, that their efforts would likely be undermined if the airplane maker’s key machinists union votes down a proposed labor contract due to go to before the membership on Wednesday.

A contract locking in Boeing’s labor costs, along with the tax incentives, is key to state officials’ plan to keep the 777X production local. Boeing has said that barring a “yes” vote on the contract, it would be looking at other potential locations.

The tax measure passed the Senate by a vote of 42 to 2.

“Our vote isn’t near as important as theirs,” said Democratic state Senator Brian Hatfield of Raymond, Washington, said of the union vote.

“It’s a big deal,” he added. “It is your job and your family and your pension, but it also has lots to do with the future of the state.”

Along with a bill to commit more state funds to aerospace worker training programs, the tax incentives bill headed to the Washington state House, which was expected to act later in the day.

Boeing’s latest jet – the 777X, a successor to its most profitable long-haul aircraft – would secure tens of thousands of jobs in the Seattle area, which is competing with non-unionized workers in the U.S. South, where wages are lower.

Earlier this week, it appeared Boeing had little leverage over the legislature because building the jet next to the current 777 assembly would lead to cost savings and limiting risks associated with locating the work elsewhere.

Leaders of the International Association of Machinists stood alongside Governor Jay Inslee when he announced his tax and labor plans for Boeing.

But at a raucous union meeting Thursday night, IAM President Tom Wroblewski tore up the proposed contract and called it “a piece of crap.”

Hours later Boeing said it was ready to look for another location.

Protest against the proposed contract continued on Friday, as union members rallied in Boeing’s Everett factory.

Analysts reacted cautiously to the union opposition, saying a deal could still be reached, despite the heated rhetoric.

Boeing and IAM union leaders reached a tentative deal after confidential and exclusive talks that were first reported by Reuters.

The deal calls for lower healthcare benefits and a new retirement plan, and a separate draft agreement with state officials would provide for tax and other incentives.

The vote by 31,000 members is scheduled to go ahead on Wednesday, and there are no scheduled talks with Boeing about a different offer, said Jonathan Battaglia, a union spokesman.

Industry experts say Washington faces competition from states including South Carolina, where Boeing assembles some of its 787 Dreamliners, as well as Texas and Utah.

Japan, whose heavy industry builds wings for the Dreamliner, is seen as a contender to build the wings for the 777X, the longest wings designed for a Boeing jetliner.

The new standoff comes as Boeing prepares to launch the 777X with potentially record orders at the Dubai Airshow. But the discord is not expected to derail those plans, industry sources said.

The head of European airline group IAG said on Friday it was interested in the 777X for Iberia and British Airways.
