Herbal Supplements Contain Unlabeled Plants, Fillers – The Weather Channel [ BeritaTerkini ]

Consumers looking to fight off colds this winter might want to consider something other than herbal supplements. Many people might already be weary of foods mislabeled as all-natural. Now, consumers should also be suspicious of herbal products contaminated or substituted with alternative plant species and fillers not listed on the labels, according to a study from the University of Guelph, Ontario published in the journal BMC Medicine.

(ABOVE: Surprising “All-Natural” Foods that Might Be Fakes)

A DNA analysis tested the authenticity of 44 herbal products (primarily capsules) from 12 companies. Nearly half of the products were considered authentic — indicating that they contained DNA from a species that matched the main ingredient on the label — but many of those products still contained ingredients not listed on the label.

Out of the 44 total products, 30 featured product substitution. Only two out of the 12 companies tested did not feature any substitution, contamination or the inclusion of fillers. Some of these contaminants could even pose serious health risks to consumers.

One product labeled as St. John’s wort — a plant believed to alleviate mild depression — actually contained Senna alexandrina, which is a Food and Drug Administration-approved laxative that can cause side effects from prolonged use — such as chronic diarrhea, liver damage and abdominal pain.

“Currently there are no standards for authentication of herbal products,” the study authors concluded. “Although there is considerable evidence of the health benefits of herbal medicine, the industry suffers from unethical activities by some of the manufacturers, which includes false advertising, product substitution, contamination and use of fillers.”

Researchers hope to build a DNA library that companies can use to guarantee their products are authentic.

Calif. company recalls prepackaged salad, sandwich [ BeritaTerkini ]

RICHMOND, Calif. (AP) — More than 90 tons of ready-to-eat salads and sandwiches by a California catering company are being recalled after 26 people in three states were sickened by a bacterial strain of E. coli linked to its products, federal health officials said Sunday.

Richmond-based Glass Onion Catering are recalling approximately 181,620 pounds of salads and sandwich wraps containing cooked chicken and ham, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said.

The products were produced between Sept. 23 and Nov. 6, and were shipped to distribution centers in California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Texas. The Contra Costa Times reports (http://bit.ly/1bqp5Z1) the company supplies food to Trader Joe’s, Super Fresh Goods and Delish.

The FSIS said it began monitoring a cluster of illnesses involving E. coli O157:H7 on Oct. 29 and then was notified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that California authorities had reported people sickened from eating pre-packaged salads with grilled chicken.

In Washington, three people who were sickened with the bacterium told investigators they ate ready-to-eat salads from Trader Joe’s, said Tim Church, a spokesman with the state’s Department of Health.

The FSIS says the bacteria can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps two to eight days after being exposed to it. While most people recover within a week, some develop kidney failure.

The Food and Drug Administration has a full list of products being recalled on its website at: www.fda.gov/Food/RecallsOutbreaksEmergencies/Recalls/default.htm

‘Homeland’ Recap: There Is No Dana [ BeritaTerkini ]

Playing to its strengths – and avoiding its weaknesses – leads to a rock-solid episode

If you’re going to be faintly ridiculous, work that faint ridiculousness. That’s the lesson Homeland appears to have learned, and I couldn’t be happier. Well, okay, yeah, I’d be happier if Homeland were the truly great show it once was, or at least promised to be – a sober exploration of War on Terror blowback, rooted in the emotional turmoil of two rival, romantically entwined operatives broken in the blast. But will I settle for a show where the acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency locks his replacement, the head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, in a conference room, then turns the lights out just to be a dick? Hell yeah. Senator Lockhart may have put it best with his incredulous “What the fuck?” but at last, here’s a what the fuck moment worth cheering for.

Throughout “Gerontion,” written by Chip Johannessen and directed (with the increasing visual panache that’s become the show’s hallmark of late) by Carl Franklin, there’s a sense that Homeland‘s using its more outlandish plot points to go somewhere, rather than shoot its way out of a hole it dug itself into. Take Majid Javadi’s brutal murder of his ex-wife and her daughter-in-law last week, the moral and narrative centerpiece of this week’s episode. Yes, it’s an act of straight-up villainy just a few steps shy of tying a damsel in distress to the railroad tracks. But Saul’s interrogation of his former friend reveals that this isn’t a guy who lives for cruelty, but rather a guy who’s discovered that cruelty is the way to make a living.

 Seven Ways to Save ‘Homeland’

The world of retaliatory strikes, clandestine assassinations, and political persecutions Javadi inhabits is one he entered out of pragmatism, one where his aptitude for these things made him indispensable, and one where his indispensability gave him the opportunity to secretly enrich himself at the expense of his fundamentalist bosses. In Javadi, we see Saul, if Saul had let his access to the machinery of death shape his personality instead of trying to make it the other way around. More than just fear for his life, Javadi’s panic at being sent back to Iran is terror over becoming just another cog in that machine instead of its operator. Ultimately it’s Saul’s promise to put him back in charge that motivates him to cooperate more even than a desire to keep on breathing.

Javadi’s not the only gear who’s not happy to keep on spinning, and honestly, maybe early retirement suits Peter Quinn. How else to explain one of the Agency’s top black operatives getting caught on some suburbanite’s security camera like he was posing for a selfie? Again, having an elite assassin get caught so flat-footed seems at first like an example of Homeland doing goofy-ass shit just to keep the plot wheels spinning, but look where it gets them: a tense exploration of the conflict between intelligence and law enforcement; an opportunity to test the limits of Carrie’s emotional and even physical tolerance for covering up crimes for the greater good; an excuse for Dar Adal to suss out Quinn’s real loyalties with what seemed like legitimately hurt feelings; a way for Quinn to face his guilt while falling on his sword for someone else’s; and a magnificent, exasperated lecture from a frustrated detective in which all of Saul and Carrie and Quinn and Adal’s hard work is referred to, with some justification, as simply “this shit.” “You fuckin’ people,” he continues. “Have you ever done anything but made things worse?” Gooooood question.

The show even demonstrated a willingness to serve up surprises based not on plot twists, but in unexplored character depths. Dar Adal’s betrayal of Saul to curry favor with Senator Lockhart seemed like a done deal, making his betrayal of that betrayal supremely satisfying. Whatever else Adal is, he’s someone who takes the work of the CIA seriously; whatever else Saul is, he’s good at that particular job. Given the choice between political expedience and a high-risk but potentially high-payoff bit of human intelligence, naturally Adal would take the latter. Lockhart’s inability to see that coming would be quite an indictment of his pending leadership, but for the fact that I’m guessing pretty much everyone in the audience failed to see it coming too.

But the episode’s best surprise was what it didn’t do: waste any time at all on the goddamn Brody family. I try not to be too hard on that storyline, but the total lack of regret I felt over its absence has me rethinking that policy. Jettisoning Dana’s pro-forma acts of teenage rebellion and self-assertion, as well as Jessica’s flat exasperation with them, gave the show the time it needed to work with, y’know, the things the show’s actually about. Hell, it even found time for some lovely magic-hour twilight lighting and, amazingly, a happy(ish) ending for everyone involved. Viewers included.

Lady Gaga unveils ‘flying dress’ [ BeritaTerkini ]

Lady Gaga’s album sales are already stratospheric, so why not her evening wear?

The Applause singer has unveiled a high-tech, white vehicle she calls the world’s first flying dress. The contraption lifted her inside a mammoth building in New York City, where she held a launch party for her new album.

The 27-year-old New Yorker said this was “maybe a small step for Volantis” – as she calls the battery-powered metal dress – but “a big-time step” for Lady Gaga.

She says her ultimate goal is to stage the first musical performance from space.

Her third studio album, Artpop, will be released today.

Don’t Stress Your Pets Out! [ BeritaTerkini ]

Pets lead a life of luxury. They can sleep all day, don't have to work, and can get room service no matter where they are. But sometimes these pampered pets can get sick of it all and just want to work a little. Lack of exercise, loneliness, jealousy, and being contained can contribute to a cat or dog feeling a little anxious and stressed out. Ever notice your dog acting a little down in the dumps during vacation? Your pet's life isn't all play and no work, and with changes in his environment as well as insufficient releases of energy, his day can be just as stressful as yours.

Carole Wilbourn, a cat therapist, said that depending on how sensitive and emotionally thin-skinned an animal is it can respond to stress in different ways. "Cats, dogs, and other companion animals are affected by people's body language and voice," Wilbourn said.

Symptoms of a pet being stressed out are very similar to that of humans.

It's crazy talk when a human has a conversation with herself, but when a dog barks at absolutely nothing, it's ignored. However, this is one sign of a stressed out pup. Whether yelping at animals out of hostility, or just woofing at nothing, this could be cause for concern. Talking back to your pet can stimulate their minds and calm them down a bit.

Nail biting is a very common and addicting habit that is done by many people as well as animals. But pets get the raw end of the deal as they sometimes struggle biting up their legs.

Staring into nothing, asleep with eyes wide open, is one way to detach from the world without going some place better. Like us, when pets don't have any excitement in their lives, they tend to stare at their shadows imagining a life filled with more Frisbee fetch games and walks in the park.

After an entire day of relaxing, you still find it difficult to get motivated to do something – anything. It's never an opportune time to tackle a heavy workload if you're not feeling up to par and are overwhelmed. Stress levels break down the immune system in people and their pets. Excessive drooling and vomiting can be a sign that your pet has way too much, or way too little on his plate.

Okay, so this isn't a normal symptom of human stress, but a cat who misses the litter box, or simply forgets that's what it's there for, can be feeling a little purr-plexed.

Luckily, if you feel that your tail is between your legs there are antidotes created to help balance your pet's mood. Anti-depressants are on the market for those less than playful and sulking four-legged creatures we call friends. A Japanese company, Medical Life Care Giken, has also created a patch to measure the amount of stress our pets are experiencing. It is applied to the animals paw pad and detects the amount of sweat released, which is directly related to how they feel.

If supplements and patches aren't the perfect solution for your  pooch, Wilbourn suggests, "Make sure their diet is healthy and they get regular check ups; make sure the litter box is in good shape. Soft music can help as well as aromatherapy because lavender is soothing and healing. Also, spend more time playing with them throughout the day."

Sparklehorse Tribute Album to Feature Flaming Lips, Mark Lanegan [ BeritaTerkini ]

Proceeds from ‘Last Box of Sparklers’ will fund campaign for mental illness awareness

Three years after the suicide of Mark Linkous, a tribute album to Sparklehorse is being produced to honor his memory. Titled Last Box of Sparklers, the album is a project of Box of Stars, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting awareness of mental health issues.

An impressive lineup has been assembled for the tribute, with recordings already contributed by the Flaming Lips, Mark Lanegan, Mercury Rev, Cowboy Junkies, Califone, Brent Haviland and Phantogram, among others. Box of Stars says that The Joy Formidable, Jason Lytle of Grandaddy and Portugal. the Man have also signed up and are waiting to record. Some of the contributing artists will participate in a PSA campaign by the organization to fight the stigma of mental illness.

Random Notes: Hottest Rock Pictures

According to the project’s website, after Box of Stars co-founder Jessica Richardson first started spreading word of the album, she found out that Flaming Lips and MGMT producer Dave Fridmann was already working on a Mark Linkous tribute with Marc Fuller from Edie Road Studio. Richardson says that they decided to join forces, so Fridmann and Fuller handed over the tracks they had already completed for Box of Stars to use. Fridmann will be mastering the entire collection.

Box of Stars has set up a campaign on the crowd-funding site Indiegogo to raise money for the album’s completion and its media campaign. Of the $ 50,000 the organization is seeking, more than $ 15,000 has been raised so far, with 11 days left to go. The funds will be used to finish the recording (which Box of Stars says is now three-quarters complete), design and press the CDs and vinyl, promote the album’s message and build an archive of personal stories about mental health for the Box of Stars website and its YouTube channel. They will also be used to create some of the perks offered to donors, including CD box sets, t-shirts, signed items from participating artists and private concerts.

Virgin Galactic Gets NBC as Media Partner for First Commercial Flight [ BeritaTerkini ]

Space is the final frontier, at least as far as tourism is concerned, and Virgin Galactic  is set to be the first commercial company to offer space tourism. Now the company has a media partner to cover that auspicious event.

Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic has signed an exclusive deal with NBC Universal to televise the inaugural commercial space flight of SpaceShipTwo. Sir Richard and his children, Holly and Sam, are scheduled to be the first private passengers to travel into space on SpaceShipTwo from Virgin Galactic’s terminal at Spaceport America in New Mexico, with a launch tentatively scheduled next year on some date still to be determined.

NBC News’ Peacock Productions will features coverage across NBC Universal’s brands and platforms, including MSNBC, CNBC, SYFY, The Weather Channel and NBCNews.com, culminating in a primetime special airing on NBC the night before launch, as well as a three-hour live event on the Today show hosted by Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie.

“Virgin Galactic is thrilled that NBC Universal will join us on our exciting first journey to space,” said Sir Richard. “In this first chapter of commercial space travel, we will help make space accessible and inspire countless more people to join us in the pursuit of space exploration and science innovation.”

Virgin Galactic, owned by Sir Richard’s Virgin Group and aabar Investments PJS, is on track to be the world’s first commercial spaceline. The company has already accepted nearly $ 80 million in deposits from roughly 640 individuals who want to travel into space. Travel agents trained in space tourism who are members of the Virtuoso luxury travel consortium have booked many if not most of those passengers.

The new spaceship (SpaceShipTwo, VSS Enterprise) and carrier craft (WhiteKnightTwo, VMS Eve) have been developed for Virgin Galactic’s vehicle fleet by Mojave-based Scaled Composites, founded by Burt Rutan, SpaceShipOne is built to carry six customers, or the equivalent scientific research payload, on suborbital space flights. The vehicles will allow an out-of-the-seat, zero-gravity experience with views of Earth. The VSS Enterprise and VMS Eve test flight program is well under way leading to Virgin Galactic commercial operations, which will be based at Spaceport America in New Mexico.

‘Thor: The Dark World’ Thunders at the Box Office [ BeritaTerkini ]

Plus: Nazis outrace Lance Armstrong at the art house

WINNERS OF THE WEEK: Supernatural dudes. It’s hammer time, and you can’t touch Thor: The Dark World, this weekend’s only new wide release and by far the top-grossing movie, debuting with an estimated $ 86.1 million. That’s well above the $ 65.7 million earned by the original Thor two and a half years ago, and with a global total already of $ 327 million, there’s no reason to think this sequel won’t surpass the 2011 Thor‘s worldwide haul of $ 450 million. As with the smashing success of the recent Iron Man 3, the sales for The Dark World suggest that 2012′s goodwill-generating The Avengers has extra long coattails. Of course, good word-of-mouth (measured by an A- grade at CinemaScore) and surcharges from 3D and IMAX helped.

Meanwhile the time-traveling hero of About Time expanded his courtship of Rachel McAdams into wide release during the film’s second week, from 175 screens to 1,200. The result was a nearly 400 percent boost in revenue, to an estimated $ 5.2 million, and a leap from 13th place to ninth. In ten days, the romantic comedy has earned $ 6.7 million.

The 10 Worst Superhero Movies of the Past 10 Years

You’d think a female-skewing romantic comedy would be smart counterprogramming against a superhero movie (indeed, 62 percent of The Dark World moviegoers were male), but it wasn’t necessary. In fact, in a very close race for second place on the chart were two guy movies and one kids’ movie, all holding up well from last weekend. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa held onto second place with an estimated $ 11.3 million, down a modest 44 percent from last week, for a three-week total of $ 78.8 million. Cartoon Free Birds flew up one spot to third place on an estimate of $ 11.2 million, down just 29 percent from last week, for a two-weekend total of $ 30.2 million. At Number Four, slipping one spot, Last Vegas claimed an estimated $ 11.1 million, a decline of just 32 percent, for a 10-day total of $ 33.5 million. (All three movies are close enough that they may yet switch rankings when final sales figures are released on Monday.)

As these three holdovers demonstrated, nearly everyone did well this weekend. Total box office was up about 30 percent from last weekend, thanks to Thor, which brought new people into the multiplex and then found other titles for them to watch if The Dark World was sold out. This seems like one of those cases of a rising tide lifting all boats …

LOSER OF THE WEEK: Ender’s Game. … unless two of the boats are on a collision course, and one torpedoes the other. Would-be blockbuster sci-fi adventure Ender’s Game was apparently the one movie hurt by The Dark World; no surprise since they were trying to fill the same niche in the marketplace. Last week’s box office champ, it plummeted 62 percent this week to an estimated $ 10.3 million, dropping to fifth place. Its total after 10 days is just $ 44.0 million, not really the numbers you want to see on a movie that cost $ 110 million to make. Even the overseas take, usually enough to save these sorts of pictures when they flop at home, is meager this time, just $ 9.1 million so far. Lionsgate/Summit has hesitated to announce a sequel  (Orson Scott Card wrote several Ender’s books), and with numbers this dismal, a sequel will probably never happen.

BOOKS AND BIKES: The top art-house debut was The Book Thief, based on the 2007 best-seller about a German girl who, during World War II, hides stolen books and a Jewish refugee from the Nazis. Opening on just four screens, it earned $ 108,000, or $ 27,000 per screen, the highest average of any film currently playing. (Thor averaged $ 22,418.) Somewhat less muscular was the opening of The Armstrong Lie, Alex Gibney’s documentary about Lance Armstrong’s fall from grace, which opened on five screens with $ 30,904. That’s $ 6,181 per screen, respectable for a documentary.

Expanding this week were other art-house favorites and Oscar hopefuls. In its fourth week, 12 Years a Slave expanded into wide release and earned an estimated $ 6.6 million, good for seventh place on the chart and a total to date of $ 17.3 million. Robert Redford’s solo act All Is Lost more than doubled its theater count to 401 and added an estimated $ 1.2 million to its gross, which is now $ 2.9 million after four weeks. Matthew McConaughey’s AIDS drama Dallas Buyers Club expanded from nine screens to 35 and earned an estimated $ 629,000, or an impressive $ 17,971 per theater. (Its two-week total is $ 985,000.) And lesbian romance Blue Is the Warmest Color doubled its screen count to 71 and took in another estimated $ 254,000, for a three-week total of $ 754,000. Not too shabby for a three-hour French-language film with an NC-17 rating. Watch for these movies to continue jostling for attention as they continue to expand to wider release during the final weeks of 2013 awards consideration.

Kanye West Makes Surprise Appearance at Odd Future Carnival [ BeritaTerkini ]

Kanye West Makes Surprise Appearance at Odd Future Carnival

Rapper performs ‘New Slaves’ and ‘Late’ with Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt

Fans at the second annual Odd Future carnival were in for a treat last night as Kanye West took a moment out between Yeezus tour dates to make a surprise appearance at the show. Following in the steps of Lil Wayne’s 2012 guest stint, West took the stage during Tyler, the Creator’s headlining set to perform the Yeezus track “New Slaves,” joined by Tyler and Earl Sweatshirt.

A clearly delighted Tyler took the mic to introduce West’s second selection. “I don’t know what to do right now, so – can I have a hug first? I am so fucking happy,” he said. West went on to perform “Late” off his 2005 album, Late Registration, trading lines with his host.

Best Albums of 2013, Mid-Year Report: ‘Yeezus’

Kanye West declared himself a big fan of Tyler, the Creator in a recent interview with 97.1 AMP Radio in Los Angeles. As Rap-Up reports, West even described the younger rapper as “a good mentor,” and said that he helped out with some of the Yeezus merchandizing.

“He’s so talented and understands things because he went to film school. I literally would like e-mail and be like, ‘Can you teach me how to make videos? I want to learn,’” West told the station.

The Yeezus tour, which has been on hold after a series of cancellations and logistical setbacks, is set to resume on November 16th in Philadelphia.

The risks of inauthentic herbals – DigitalJournal.com [ BeritaTerkini ]

DNA bar coding studies have revealed that herbal products are often contaminated or contain alternative compounds and fillers. This means that consumers do not always get what they pay for, and that some “remedies” can actually cause harm.
Canadian research has revealed, through the use of a DNA barcoding study, that some of the so-called “natural” products bought from health stores are contaminated, with many containing substitute ingredients. These products are generally labeled as “herbal remedies.”

The study was conducted by researchers from the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario at the University of Guelph and the findings have been published in the journal BMC Medicine. The paper is titled “DNA barcoding detects contamination and substitution in North American herbal products.”

For the research, the group examined 44 herbal products produced by 12 manufacturers and sold in the U.S. and Canada. The analysis found that 59 percent of those products contained DNA barcodes from plant species not listed on their labels, and a third of the products contained undeclared contaminants and fillers. In their paper, the researchers noted that substituting ingredients and adding filers can dilute the otherwise helpful activities of certain plant species.

As an example the research team found that a sample labelled as St John’s Wort was actually substituted with extract of the plant Senna alexandrina. This is an FDA-approved herbal laxative, and is not recommended for prolonged use as it can cause side effects such as chronic diarrhoea and liver damage. Other products were contaminated with Parthenium hysterophorus, a type of plant commonly known as feverfew, which has side effects including numbness of the mouth and nausea, and can heighten the risk of bleeding when taken with blood-thinning medicines such as Warfarin.

Commenting on the findings, Graham Lord, director of the U.K.’s National Institute for Health Research Comprehensive Biomedical Research Center, told New Scientist magazine: “The level of regulation of herbal products is not good enough. It’s an intelligent idea that the authors suggest to use DNA barcoding to determine purity and really get to grips with the provenance.”

The research did not indicate whether or not a herbal remedy is effective; the study looked into the claims of “purity” made by the manufacturers of the products.

Syria has used incendiary bombs dozens of times: rights group [ BeritaTerkini ]

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Syria’s air force has used incendiary weapons in dozens of attacks over the last year, Human Rights Watch said on Sunday, including a half-tonne bomb which killed 37 people at a school in the northern province of Aleppo.

Calling on the world to condemn Syria’s use of the weapons, which contain flammable substances designed to set objects on fire and cause burn injuries, it said international laws restricting their deployment also needed to be tightened.

“Syria has used incendiary weapons to inflict terrible harm on civilians, including many children,” said Bonnie Docherty, an arms researcher at the organization, which will present its findings at an international meeting in Geneva this week.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is fighting a 2-1/2 year civil war with rebels seeking his overthrow. The crisis started with peaceful protests but escalated into armed conflict after his forces shot at demonstrators demanding change.

The scale of the violence on both sides has steadily escalated, with the authorities resorting to tanks and artillery, then helicopters, fighter jets and surface-to-surface missiles to strike at their opponents.

As well as incendiary weapons, Assad’s forces have used cluster bombs and vacuum bombs and are accused by the West of firing rockets loaded with the nerve agent sarin into districts outside Damascus in August, killing hundreds.

“Other countries should condemn Syria’s use of incendiary weapons just as they have its use of chemical weapons and cluster bombs,” Docherty said.

HRW said that since last November, when it documented one of the first cases of incendiary bomb use in the Damascus suburb of Daraya, Syrian jets and helicopters had dropped incendiary bombs at least 56 times. All of the weapons were made in the Soviet Union, it said.

The organization quoted Saleyha Ahsan, a British emergency doctor who treated patients from the Aleppo school attack on August 26, as saying most of them were covered in burns.

One victim arrived with what she described as 90 percent, third degree burns. “The clothes had been burned off him. It was the most horrific injury I have ever seen in a live patient. Only his eyes moved.”

He died before he could be evacuated to Turkey, HRW said.

Incendiary weapons can contain any number of flammable substances, including napalm, thermite, or white phosphorus.

More than 100 countries – but not Syria – have signed up to an international convention banning their use in areas with “concentrations of civilians”. But loopholes and inconsistencies limit its effectiveness, HRW said.

“The existing international law restricting the use of incendiary weapons could be strengthened in many ways,” Docherty said. “But Syria’s egregious incendiary attacks show that a global ban would be the best solution”.

In Honor Of Colorado’s 25% Tax On Marijuana! Furtastic Canines who are “Breaking the Taboo” of Drugs! [ BeritaTerkini ]

rasta-dog

A Colorado measure to impose sales and excise taxes of 25 percent on newly legalized recreational marijuana and earmark the first $ 40 million in revenue for public schools was approved by voters on Tuesday, Governor John Hickenlooper said.

The move showed a willingness on the part of Colorado voters to tax marijuana for the public benefit……

Canines are known for helping fight the war on drugs in police searches and investigations, but as early as 1997 our furry friends have been hitting the hallways in schools across the country to help prevent illegal drug possession and abuse by teenagers. Illegal drug smuggling and supply in the U.S. has skyrocketed and our schools are a fresh target point for dealers to infiltrate. Drug sniffing dogs serve as a deterrent to students considering bringing drugs on to school premises.

Drug dealers and smugglers have become very inventive when finding ways to hide drugs; they seal drugs inside furniture, vacuum-pack them in cans, stuff them into fruit, pepper, coffee and even submerge them in automobile gas tanks. K9 units are moving to the head of the class for helping police officers sniff out illegal drugs in high school lockers, parking lots and other common areas.

Drug sniffing dogs are every (police) man's best friend and are our biggest allies in the escalating fight against illegal drugs and protecting our children. The percentage of the dog's brain devoted to analyzing smells is actually 40 times larger than that of a human! It's been estimated that dogs can identify smells somewhere between 1,000 to 10,000 times better than humans can.

Drug dogs are trained to find illegal drugs, whether it's large or small amounts. Dogs really have no idea they are providing a valuable service by searching out drugs; instead dogs think they're looking for their favorite toy.

It's common knowledge in the animal world that dogs love to play tug-of-war with a towel. A handler plays with the dog and a scent-free towel as a fun toy; next a bag of marijuana (or narcotics) is rolled up inside the towel. After playing for a while, the dog connects the smell of marijuana with the smell of his favorite new toy. The handler then hides the towel, with the drugs, in various places and the dog sniffs it out alerting the handler.

Sniffing Our Way to Drug Free Schools!

Every parent wants their child to go to school to learn, and not worry about a child being confronted with drugs and pushers. Securing your child's safety from drugs requires a drug free school. First, school officials must decide whether to use drug dogs at all, next they decide whether to use police dogs or hire a private company.

Random searches around school lockers and cars in parking lots by drug sniffing dogs can be a very effective deterrent, sending a strong message that drugs won't be tolerated at school. If requested, searches in classrooms and other areas can be checked. A favorite breed that most private companies chose is the Golden Retriever; they don't appear so intimidating and threatening to kids.

Education is the key in the debate on the drugs and parents need to educate teenagers on the effects of drugs in an open and honest way. But if the cat's got your tongue when it's time for the talk, you can breathe easy with a little help from Hollywood.

Sam Branson, founder of Sundog Pictures and son of furtastic entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, released his first documentary today, "Breaking the Taboo." The film takes a look at how the war on drugs around the world can be fixed and interviews several top dog dignitaries, including four former U.S. Presidents. Sam, the documentary's executive producer, barked, "Having spent two years working on 'Breaking the Taboo', I am convinced, now more than ever, that this is a debate that has to happen. Not just on a local level, in our own communities, but on the global stage." Viewers can watch the entire film online and sign the petition to bark their opinion in the global debate on drug policy.

Twitter account associated with Iran’s leader criticises France [ BeritaTerkini ]

DUBAI (Reuters) – A Twitter account Iran experts believe is run by the office of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei criticised France on Sunday after Paris expressed reservations about a proposed deal to end a decade-old dispute over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

A message posted in English on the account @khamenei_ir said: “French officials have been openly hostile towards the Iranian nation over the past few years; this is an imprudent and inept move.”

A second tweet said: “A wise man, particularly a wise politician, should never have the motivation to turn a neutral entity into an enemy.”

The authenticity of the messages, which appeared to refer to talks in Geneva that ended on Saturday night without clinching a deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear programme, could not immediately be confirmed.

But France has traditionally taken a tougher line on Iran than most other world powers and Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has accused it of being more intransigent in talks than the United States.

Clear divisions emerged among the U.S. and European allies on the final day of the Geneva talks as France hinted that the proposal under discussion did not sufficiently neutralise the threat of an Iranian nuclear bomb.

Despite the failure of the discussions, Iran and six world powers said differences had narrowed – a softening that may worry Iranian hardliners – and they would resume negotiations in 10 days to try to end the decade-old standoff.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday denounced the outline of an accord leaked to the media, saying Tehran would be getting “the deal of the century” if world powers carried out proposals to grant Iran temporary respite from sanctions.

Israel, which is believed to have the Middle East’s only nuclear arsenal and regards Iran as a mortal threat, has repeatedly suggested it may take military action against Tehran if it does not mothball its entire nuclear programme.

Iran dismisses such demands, saying it has a sovereign right to a nuclear energy industry. Most diplomats concede that, as Tehran has expanded its nuclear capacity exponentially since 2006, the time for demanding a total shutdown has passed.

What do parrots do when their human travels? | video | @GrrlScientist [ BeritaTerkini ]

One of my cockatoos, Luna, peers out of her newest favourite toy: a large cardboard tube that I attached to the top corner of her cage. This is a female galah, Eolophus roseicapilla, also known as the rose-breasted cockatoo, roseate cockatoo or pink-and-grey cockatoo.
Image: GrrlScientist, 27 October 2013.

I am traveling this week, so I thought you might enjoy seeing a demonstration of what my parrots do when I am gone.

For those who are interested, I am visiting London to attend the Royal Society’s Young People’s science book award, for which I was a judge this year. I am looking forward to once again being at the Royal Society, chatting with my fellow judges, learning if I won my bet as to which book wins this year’s award, and of course, visiting the great city of London! (This is high praise indeed, coming from a New Yorker.)

Since this is a long and expensive journey for me, I am staying for five days — not long enough, I know, but I return to London for another five-day visit in less than two weeks, so I’ll be spending ten days in your fair city this month.

In addition to attending the Royal Society’s Young People’s science book award ceremonies, I thought I’d share some of the other exhibitions and tours that I (and my cameras) plan to attend:

The British Museum:

Natural History Museum:

Science Museum:

Kew Gardens:

IMAX:

  • And of course, whilst in London, I must see Gravity on the big BIG screen!

Being a fan of ales and bitters, I’ve already got a few favourite pubs that I plan to visit again, and a few new ones added to my list, too — thanks to my twitter pals’ many helpful suggestions. (Of course, I am always interested in visiting pubs that have a science theme or where famous writers used to hang out, too.)

Also thanks to my twitter pals’ suggestions, I have a list of recommended vegetarian/vegan curry houses to dine at — there’s a plethora of such places near the Euston Street station, so I will begin my culinary curry explorations there.

Have I missed any special exhibitions? Do you know of a special pub or curry house that you think I must visit? If so, please do let me know so I can add it to my (not yet overcrowded) schedules!

.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..

Hotel TerraVina: restaurant review | Jay Rayner [ BeritaTerkini ]

Hotel TerraVina interior

Canteen chic: Hotel TerraVina’s ‘institutional’ interior. Photograph: Victoria Jones/Solent News

Hotel TerraVina: Woodlands, Netley Marsh, New Forest, Hampshire (02380 293 784). Meal for two: £90-£120

Nobody visiting the Hotel TerraVina could ever forget where they were. They wouldn’t be allowed to. The walls are plastered with cuttings about the place: bevel mounted, under glass, wooden frames. It doesn’t matter how small the publication. It’s all here, glowering down at you, challenging you not to be impressed. My eye flicked from restaurant review to local newspaper report to trade magazine feature. At any moment I expected to come across a certificate for swimming in your pyjamas.

I doubt this review will make it under glass. It’s not that the Hotel TerraVina is without redeeming features. The staff are kind and solicitous. As the “Vina” bit of the name suggests wine-heads will love it. But there’s something so self-regarding about the food, so mannered and overengineered, that it all ends up being exhausting. I arrived sprightly, I left needing a long lie down. I also arrived expecting to like it. The fact is I felt connected to the Hotel TerraVina. A decade ago I wrote a novel about a restaurant critic who decides to apologise for everything he’s ever done wrong. For complicated reasons he needed to have a Francophone name that could also have an English pronunciation.

One day I stumbled across an interview with Gerard Basset, a renowned sommelier and one of the founders of the Hotel and Bistro du Vin group. I liked his small chain very much, and the name worked perfectly: it’s pronounced Ba-say in French; in English, as in hound. Marc Basset was born. After a while my fictional restaurant critic expanded into the real world: Marc Basset became the name under which I booked countless restaurant tables. I did that for years, indeed until last week. Now I’ve told the story it’s time to retire Mr Basset. He can return to being entirely fictional.

Gerard Basset won many awards, sold the hotel chain and opened this lump of bright red brick – think child’s playset red brick – in the New Forest, as a hotel dedicated to wine. The list is impressive: long, yes, but well organised and with lots of choice at price points below £30. It’s serious about wine without being pompous. It was its reputation for wine that had first made me consider coming.

A few weeks ago David Everitt-Matthias, chef at Le Champignon Sauvage in Cheltenham – which has just won the OFM award for outstanding contribution – sealed the deal by telling me one of his former chefs was now cooking there. Everitt-Matthias is a very good thing. His earthy approach to ambitious food, the way he makes humble ingredients sing, has always been thrilling. If one of his team was deep in the woods with Mr Basset, I had to go.

Unfortunately the whole thing is overheated, both figuratively and literally; we had to open a door by our table that led out to the garden, to let in a breeze. The decor is also odd: angular and blocky with a lot of Fanta orange-varnished wood. There’s a touch of the institutional to it, as if it were a retirement home for hip older people who are not yet prepared to go the way of Laura Ashley prints. The food is equally self-conscious. A selection of hot “tapavinas” brings something called lamb bonbons, which sounds sweet and playful. They are deep-fried balls of braised, tangled and brutally dry lamb. It’s a canapé in training for the Heimlich manoeuvre. Onion bhajis are just a tub of dry strands of caramelised onions, as though someone had sent us out a bowl of the garnish for another dish.

Many of the dishes seem to be constructed words first, as if they wrote what sounded like a cool description and then had to cook it. “Flamed mackerel” sounds butch and rugged. What we get are two thin strands of adequately cooked fillet. An accompanying gooseberry purée doesn’t just cut through the oiliness; its acidity slashes and slashes again. A mouthful of that and your lips quickly pucker to a cat’s bum. There are lumps of granola. Like I’d had for breakfast that morning. It’s an ectopic ingredient, secreted into the middle of a meal it has no business being a part of. It’s terribly drying.

That’s a repeated theme. Too much of this food is the Tena Lady of gastronomy, drying everything in its path. A “black pudding purée” is an ugly grey smudge and nowhere near moist enough to do the business with pigeon breast, however perfectly rare it is served. I end up looking to the oiliness of fried Parma ham to get the whole dish moving, but it’s stopped in its tracks by hazelnut crumb. It’s the same problem with a piece of cod loin with fried basil gnocchi and a balsamic gel. The fish crumbles into the capers, and it all gets stuck in the gel.

Far better is a plate of big gamey venison faggots, clearly made with offal. This is proper ballsy cooking. And, praise be, there is even a sauce – though it is fiercely reduced to the point where it starts to stick my tongue to the roof of my mouth. Matron, pass the chisel.

cod loin
Too clever by half: cod loin. Photograph: Victoria Jones/Solent News

The kitchen does know how to cook individual ingredients. There’s technique on show. The problem lies in putting dishes together. Things are missed out. There’s too much grandstanding. They attempt to send us out a freebie of a pumpkin velouté with a crisp wild mushroom arancini. (I insist it must be paid for.) I can see why they wanted us to try it; the pumpkin velouté is rich and deep and sugary, and has you whacking your tongue around your gums. The arancini is nicely done. Roasted pumpkin seeds add crunch. But even this is relentless. The velouté needs to be lighter. Like those framed cuttings, it’s just overkill.

As is a white chocolate parfait with a walnut ice-cream that fades unto nothing against its brutal sweetness. A rhubarb soufflé is pert and bright and, being simplicity itself, the very best thing we eat. And unlike the wine list none of this feels like good value. Starters are from £7 to £11, mains from £14 to low 20s. For that you expect your lunch to be a pleasure rather than something to be stumbled through. You want to be fed, not lectured to. You want it all to make sense and it doesn’t. Oh well, at least it saves on the framing costs.

■ For food from a chef with an interesting pedigree, try the Red Lion Freehouse at Pewsey in Wiltshire. Guy Manning worked at London’s Chez Bruce and Thomas Keller’s Per Se in New York before heading back to England. They make everything in house “from the lime cordial to the ketchup”. The food also has a sense of place: the menu might include a ravioli of Wiltshire truffles. There are hints of all those high-end kitchens in the cooking’s finesse, but it never loses sight of the fact that it is a pub. (redlionfreehouse.com)

■ This week sees the publication of Noma chef René Redzepi’s intriguing book A Work in Progress: Journals, Recipes and Snapshots. It’s both a cookbook and a year in the life of one of the world’s most influential cooks. It has a foreword from Lars Ulrich of Metallica. Go figure.

■ Those who think gastronomic London is too smug by half will be delighted: Tripadvisor’s latest global top 10 fine-dining list doesn’t include a single joint in the capital. The only British restaurant listed is Raymond Blanc’s Le Manoir at number 7.
