‘Homeland’ Recap: Hey Man, Nice Shot [ BeritaTerkini ]

Bullets and betrayals fly in a fantastic hour of espionage

As a rule, rooting for the main character of the show you’re watching to get shot is a pretty clear sign that something’s gone really wrong with the show you’re watching. But rules are meant to be broken. That’s what Carrie Mathison thought when she defied a direct order and tried to stop the assassination of the man who could clear her beloved Brody’s name, even if it meant flushing months of work down the toilet like so much lithium. And that’s why, when Peter Quinn pulled the trigger and plugged Carrie in the arm, I cheered: Homeland has managed to get me as invested in its spy games as I am in the spies themselves.

That’s an impressive feat for a show that was all but ordering viewers to abandon ship at gunpoint just a few episodes ago. And granted, it had to abandon a couple of longstanding themes to pull it off: I doubt anyone misses the Brody family all that much right now (though I’m sure, sigh, that they’ll return), but it does pain me some to remember what a thoughtful treatment of war-on-terror trauma and blowback this show used to be. Still, as a pure espionage thriller, Homeland‘s working as well right now as it ever has.

 Seven Ways to Save ‘Homeland’

For one thing, the rival spies are entertaining as all hell. I’ve done a lot of complaining about Homeland‘s tendency to turn its antagonists into comic-book villains, but come on, the idea of a white-shoe law firm secretly staffed with silencer-toting, bathtub-body-dissolving assassins is too delightful to turn up your nose at. (It’d certainly make a lot of my old college classmates a lot more interesting to talk to at class reunions.) Even Mira’s parodically French boyfriend became interesting when the show revealed that he was running game on both Berensons, cozying up to Mira to get access to Saul. Coming at the exact moment when Saul’s at the top of his own game, rendezvousing with the world’s most wanted man by traveling to Caracas to meet with Brody and positioning Majid Javadi as the tip of a spear by which the U.S. will effect regime change in Iran, it’s a quiet little gutpunch to the Berensons’ personal and professional lives alike.

It helped that the writing and filming were tight, too. Among other highlights, writers Alex Gansa (one of the showrunners) and James Yoshimura served up a William Carlos Williams quote as a clandestine code, and gave Carrie and Quinn a pretty priceless exchange in their emergency ride to the hospital: “Something’s going on.” “Yeah, you got shot.” “No shit – you shot me.” Venezuelan ganglord El Niño’s understated greeting to Saul – “You have a good flight?” – was a chuckler as well.

But they also did their best with some of the season’s softest storylines so far: the crisis of conscience experienced by Fara, a character they haven’t even bothered to give a last name to yet as best I can tell, and Carrie’s unwanted pregnancy, her neglect of which they’re handling with an admirable lack of kid gloves. Fara hasn’t been given a whole lot more to do but be competent and look worried, but her cross-cultural interplay with her father and caught-between-a-rock-and-a-hard-place position regarding her family back in Tehran gave her a backstory that, hopefully, the character itself will soon live up to.

Meanwhile, I’d like to think that the show will have the stones to have Carrie actually go ahead and end her pregnancy and allow us to accept this like adults, but somehow I doubt it. Nominally progressive American television generally professes a belief in a woman’s right to choose, but tends to render that choice moot by eliminating unwanted pregnancies with car accidents, gunshots, and miscarriages, any one of which strikes me as more likely than Carrie correctly assessing she’s in no position to carry and raise a kid and deciding accordingly.

Director Seith Mann handled the proceedings with panache. The way he staged Carrie’s entrance into the church where she’d meet with the sinister lawyer/hitman Mr. Franklin – at one point following directly behind her with a memorable tracking shot – or Saul’s arrival at the Tower of David in Caracas suggested these characters truly were entering slightly alien new worlds. Elsewhere, a corpse’s-eye-view shot of Franklin pouring acid on the dead bomber gave a very Breaking Bad plot point a very Breaking Bad look as well.

The big news here, of course, is that Saul (and Dar Adal, by the sound of it) knew where Brody was – and the best part of that news is that this is an extremely unpredictable and unboring way to bring Brody back into play, if bring Brody back into play they must. Show of hands: Who else expected Carrie to stumble across that chump on a recon mission to uncover more of Javadi’s Caracas connections? Instead, we find out that master spy Saul is even more of a master than we thought, playing his protégé even as the two of them teamed up to play everyone else. What’s more, this explains one of the most inexplicable developments of the season so far: El Niño’s seemingly nonsensical decision to keep Brody alive and imprisoned rather than just shoot him the moment he started causing trouble. (Honestly, any valid reason for keeping Brody alive beyond “Showtime’s executives ordered them to” is a most welcome development.) Homeland‘s never lacked for either betrayals or bullets, but rarely has either been as effectively aimed as they were tonight.

Inspirational Gala Saving Lives With Mayor Bloomberg! [ BeritaTerkini ]

HSUS

The Humane Society of the United States celebrated the life-saving work of its Animal Rescue Programs on Friday November 15th in NYC with its "To The Rescue!" Benefit.  The HSUS is responsible for saving and rehabilitating thousands of animals, and travels across the country to help animals in need from puppy mills, dog fighting, neglect and natural disasters.  Thanks to the generous donators and supporters of the evening, the HSUS will have the funds to work even more of their animal saving magic.

As the nation's largest and most powerful animal protection organization, The HSUS has been saving thousands of animal lives every year since 1954.  They use equipment, expertise, and financial resources to assist law enforcement with investigations, evidence and animal seizure, as well as coordinate animal care, sheltering, and final relocation.  Cruelty is prevented with a multi-pronged approach, which includes advocacy, outreach, and policy reform.

The night was supported by Friends of Finn, a committee founded by Amanda Hearst, who also served as the event co-chair with Georgina Bloomberg and Kimberly Ovitz, as well as HSUS president Wayne Pacelle.  Friends of Finn is made up of next-generation leaders and is dedicated to working with The HSUS to stop the inhumane treatment of dogs in puppy mills.  They raise funds for educational and public awareness initiatives as well as rescue efforts.

Amanda Hearst was inspired to start Friends of Finn because with the help of the USUS she found out her dog, Finn, was from a puppy mill, and also for her general love of animals.  Amanda said that if Finn were a celeb, he would be Will Ferrell because he is really funny and has same hair color! Maybe Finn will get the chance to meet his hilarious human twin someday!

Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of Mayor Michael Bloomberg, was honored to be involved with such a great cause.  She explained that a lot of people don't know about the majority of animal cruelty that goes on, so she feels educating people on not only spaying and neutering animals but also to not buy pets from pet stores is very important.  To be a true animal person, you have to be actively doing something to help them. Georgina has 5 rescue dogs and a smart and sweet rescue pig, Wilbur.  How oink-tastic is that!?

colbie caillat

The evening included a special live performance by singer/songwriter and The HSUS' Stop Puppy Mills Campaign spokesperson, Colbie Caillat.  Colbie believes that the HUSU helps a gigantic cause.  They are there to help every kind of animal species and to inform people about the torture that is going on around the world to all of these gorgeous animals.  They also educate people on what changes we should make to help.  She has always been a supporter of dogs and cats, and stopped eating meat 3 ½ years ago.  She explained she can't even believe she ever ate meat before.  She comes to these events and learns about horse slaughter, elephants being killed for their ivory tusks, and shark finn soup (just to name a few) and many other things that people are not aware of.  She says people do not want to listen because they do not want to change their lifestyle.  Colbie slowly started changing her lifestyle, and so can you if you truly want to be an animal supporter and advocate!  This amazing animal rescue advocate (who adopted her own golden retriever from Taiwan) does the best she can to inform her family, friends, and anyone she can about these important causes.  Colbie auctioned off two of her precious guitars to help support the HSUS and their animal rescue missions!  How sweet is she?!

Ali Wentworth was a flawless and hilarious host for the evening's festivities.  She believes if human beings treat animals better, they will ultimately treat  humans better.

Tornadoes Touch Down In The MidWest! Tornado Pet Tips! [ BeritaTerkini ]

emergency_dogOur thoughts go to the people affected by the massive tornado in the Midwest. At least 3 people  were killed when the tornado struck an area in Washington County, Illinois. In case of a catastrophe, the authorities will take care of the citizens, but sadly few people will take care of pets. This is why you need to get everything ready to care for your pet, should you have to face a natural disaster. Here are some useful tips to help you.

  1. If a disaster leaves you and your pet trapped indoors, always make sure there is an emergency supply of your pet's favorite food on "paw". Just as important is a strong water supply. Always have many bottles of fresh water available, as running water may not work in your home.
  2. Always keep your pet close in tornado season. Should there be an alert, you can grab your furry friend and take shelter with him.
  3. You may not be able to get in touch with your Veterinarian, so if your four-legged pal takes any medication, make sure you have enough to last at least a week.
  4. If you must leave your home, it is helpful to have a pet carrier available, but make sure it is one that your dog or cat is used to and will enter voluntarily. To ensure that your pet does not make a break for it, use a carrier that can be locked and is inescapable.
  5. Bring some of your pet's favorite belongings, such as blankets, toys and treats. Chances are, your pet will be frightened or confused, so it is a good idea to bring familiar things that will keep Fido or Fluffy at ease.
  6. In any emergency situation, people, as well as pets, will be frightened. Comfort your pet by remaining calm and speaking in a reassuring and soothing tone. Also pay attention to body language such as shaking and clinginess.
  7. Practice makes perfect. Having a well thought out escape plan can save your life and your pet's life. Every once in a while, try some evacuation exercises with your family and pooch or feline. This can help make an evacuation much more organized and calm for all involved.
  8. It is very important for your pet to always wear his or her collar with proper identification. This is similar to a human always having their driver's license with them. Pet parents can also have a tiny microchip implanted in their pet to help locate them in case they are separated. These precautions can ensure a happy reunion if you are separated from your furry friend!
  9. If you and your pet are separated, pay daily visits to local shelters, animal control facilities, veterinary offices and kennels until you have found it. You can also post photos of your lost pet. If your pet has tattoos, a microchip or other permanent identification, this will increase the chances of finding it. Be aware that collars and tags are sometimes lost.
  10. Always have a pet first aid kit ready.

Herbal cancer cure questioned – Manila Standard Today [ BeritaTerkini ]

DOCTORS warned the public against using alternative treatments like herbal medicines and food supplements, proven to be unsafe, in curing cancer.

The Philippine Society of Medical Oncology admits their increasing popularity nothwithstanding, the preparations posed health risks.

The group is composed of 196 practicing medical oncologists who actively promote cancer awareness and safe practices.

It has partnered with the Philippine College of Physicians, Food and Drug Administration, Roche and Globo Asiatico Enterprises to dispel tha myth about herbal alternatives.

“Patients should be vigilant that they are not being misled by false promises,” said the group led by PSMO President Dr. Felycette Gay Lapus.

“This year, the focus of PSMO is on information dissemination through partnerships with pharmaceutical companies, government offices and the media,” she said in a recent media briefing joined by Vice president Dr. Ellie May Villegas at EDSA Shangri-La Hotel.

Happy Thanksgiving! Tips For Caring For A Feathered Friend [ BeritaTerkini ]

The two-legged species known as humans are the proud "parents" of all different types of animals: dogs, cats, turtles, lizards, hamsters, ferrets and even horses. So, why not birds? Have you ever wondered what would happen if you decided to raise and love a parakeet or a canary? Would it be strange to hear your parents tell you to "walk the bird"? What would you feed it? How long does it live? Is it friendly? Did you know birds are the third most popular choice of pets in America, after dogs and cats?

Every year, the President of the United States pardons one very lucky turkey, allowing the relieved and grateful fellow to enjoy his holiday not on someone's dinner plate. Now, just because the Commander in Chief grants one lucky turkey his freedom, it doesn't mean the gobbler gets to spend the rest of his life in the White House. While birds make great pets, think long and hard before you decide to adopt an eagle or toucan.

First of all, turkeys should be raised in farm areas, where they have plenty of room to exercise and move. Unless you have a large, fenced in backyard, it's probably not a good idea to let your gobbling companion run around Times Square or Hollywood Boulevard. However, that doesn't mean you have to go the rest of your life without hearing the sweet sounds of chirping and flapping wings. Many birds, such as Parakeets and Cockatoos make great pets. But pet parent beware: some birds have big personalities and attitudes, so be prepared to go through some "roommate bonding" first with your winged diva. It is also important to get along with your new feathered friend because you two will most likely grow old together. For example, Amazons can live up to 50 years while Cockatoos can enjoy middle age in their forties!

Some birds, like Canaries and Finches, are seedeaters, which means that, well, they eat seeds. Aside from the obvious, these types of birds (Hard Bills), will eat certain types of plants and some insects. Other birds, like Parakeets and Cockatiels, are Hook Bills and generally feed on bark, plants and fruits. Almost all of your bird food needs can be found at your local pet store.

After eating, comes an inevitable cleanup and birds definitely make you work. Make sure there is plenty of newspaper on the bottom of Polly's cage, so cleaning any waste or excess food is easy for you. Not only is it a quick tidy-up, but your bird gets to check out the Style section while he or she eats! Loving a bird isn't much different than loving a dog: instead of barking, they chirp, instead of wagging their tails, they flap their feathers! Now, while it may take a while to form a bond with your pet bird, you two will have a good 30 to 40 years to create memories and friendship.

16. November 2013 – 13:30

Could Joe Jonas be making a play to jump into the fashion business?

The JoBro has been spending plenty of time hanging with the international fashion set.

Just last night, he and his model girlfriend Blanda Eggendschwiler were among the guests at a private VIP dinner party at Chateau Marmont hosted by GQ and Topman.

Jonas looked chic in a blue suit and bow tie. Eggendschwiler wore a little black dress.

PHOTOS: More party pics from Hollywood

Just the night before, the hot couple was also at Chateau for a Vogue dinner celebrating designer Erdem Moralioglu. Late last month, Jonas and Eggendschwiler attended a dinner honoring Vogue Italia Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani that also included Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

One of Jonas’ first public appearance after he and brothers Nick and Kevin announced they were calling it quits as the Jonas Brothers was at Salvador Ferragamo’s black-tie opening gala of the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills. And then there he was again at the opening of the Ermenegildo Zegna boutique opening, also in Beverly Hills.

Whatever the case may be, Jonas isn’t abandoning music. He’s set to deejay tonight’s anniversary party of the legendary Sunset Marquis Hotel in L.A.

Also at GQ last night were Jesse Metcalfe, Cara Santana, soccer star Robbie Rogers, Sklar Astin, Anna Camp and music producer Mark Ronson, who was on hand to help promote the launch of The Other Ball, a new annual benefit for Arms Around the Child sponsored by Topshop/Topman taking place in New York City on Dec. 10.

Why Cuck Fancer? [ BeritaTerkini ]

Why Cuck Fancer.?

It’s simple. In no way shape or form when you hear the words “you have cancer,” do you ever feel a sense of joy, relief, or excitement. IT SUCKS. You immediately think about the worse case scenario and you don’t remember a word your doctor says from then on. That’s only part the movie 50/50 had accurate: the slow daze Joseph Gordon-Levitt went into when he was told he might die.

So why do I say Cuck Fancer.? Because F*** Cancer is kind of vulgar for an 18-year-old kid embarking on a journey that he or she isn’t sure when it is going to end. For a kid who eventually wants to get hired by a big firm or start his own business and knowing that those words may hinder his chances via Facebook and other social media platforms. For the young kids whom I want to support but fear that a 13-year-old kid’s parents may not let them wear that bracelet. I am not sure why I think that today because I see this “I love (insert any inappropriate word you can think of)” bracelet everywhere. Is the word fuck worse than that? I guess so.

During my first chemo treatment, my doctor walked up to me, didn’t even ask me how I was doing, and put a hat on my head. It appropriately said “Fuck Cancer.” OK, how cool is that? I was 18, wasn’t able to go to college, and I was sitting in an infusion room with a 70-year-old man next to me on a respirator. Not only did my doctor get it, he changed my experience with cancer from then on. Little did he or I know that I would fight it two more times til I was 23 and start a non-profit organization from his sarcastic gesture.

So that’s what I did. I started a non-profit organization called Cuck Fancer. I felt that everybody could wear this bracelet. Either you completely understood what it meant, or like most people at first glance you think it is for a man named “Chuck Fancer,” who we are fighting for. It doesn’t matter as long as you wear the bracelet. There is a period at the end of Fancer (.). Why? Because it is a statement. I am not just casually saying it, I am STATING it.

I want to help young adults who do not have the resources that I had while battling cancer. I was fortunate to have loving parents, good insurance, and a wealth of support from communities I wasn’t even apart of. Unfortunately, not everyone is as privileged as I am. As young adults we need to be educated on treatments that will help our quality of life and help us get back to the life we once lived. For goodness sakes, we are YOUNG adults, diagnosed before we are even 20. What did you do before you were 20? For us cancer survivors, our world was turned upside down and we have this crazy thing called perspective that most people shouldn’t have to realize until they are older.

In the end, cancer just sucks. I have been to two funerals in the past eight months for people that I have known who have lost their battle to cancer. One of them was 13, the other was 50. The age is irrelevant, but what is relevant is that cancer does not care your age, height, ethnicity etc., it is ruthless. So as a young survivor I want to do what I can to make the lives of those fighting that much easier.

I hope my organization can give light to young adults who cannot see past their fight. I want people to see the lime green bracelet and not only let it stick out for what it looks like, but for what it stands for. I am on the other side of cancer now, as of this past April, I was finally told I was in remission. But I will never forget what cancer tried to take from me. For not only did it fail, I persevered. I took from cancer what cancer couldn’t take from me: my passion, my love for life, and my strength.

So if you are struggling with your battle and reading this article right now, just know we understand and get how hard it is. Cuck Fancer. cares and wants to help make the dark days better.

CUCK FANCER.

If any YA needs help, I am here. Visit my website at www.cuckfancer.com and email me. Join the movement. We are unique, we are strong, we are Young Adults.

Herbal Supplements Are Often Not What They Seem – New York Times [ BeritaTerkini ]

Not-So-Herbal Supplements:
A study using DNA testing offers perhaps the most credible evidence to date of adulteration, contamination and mislabeling in the herbal supplement industry.

Americans spend an estimated $ 5 billion a year on unproven herbal supplements that promise everything from fighting off colds to curbing hot flashes and boosting memory. But now there is a new reason for supplement buyers to beware: DNA tests show that many pills labeled as healing herbs are little more than powdered rice and weeds.

Using a test called DNA barcoding, a kind of genetic fingerprinting that has also been used to help uncover labeling fraud in the commercial seafood industry, Canadian researchers tested 44 bottles of popular supplements sold by 12 companies. They found that many were not what they claimed to be, and that pills labeled as popular herbs were often diluted — or replaced entirely — by cheap fillers like soybean, wheat and rice.

Consumer advocates and scientists say the research provides more evidence that the herbal supplement industry is riddled with questionable practices. Industry representatives argue that any problems are not widespread.

For the study, the researchers selected popular medicinal herbs, and then randomly bought different brands of those products from stores and outlets in Canada and the United States. To avoid singling out any company, they did not disclose any product names.

Among their findings were bottles of echinacea supplements, used by millions of Americans to prevent and treat colds, that contained ground up bitter weed, Parthenium hysterophorus, an invasive plant found in India and Australia that has been linked to rashes, nausea and flatulence.

Two bottles labeled as St. John's wort, which studies have shown may treat mild depression, contained none of the medicinal herb. Instead, the pills in one bottle were made of nothing but rice, and another bottle contained only Alexandrian senna, an Egyptian yellow shrub that is a powerful laxative. Gingko biloba supplements, promoted as memory enhancers, were mixed with fillers and black walnut, a potentially deadly hazard for people with nut allergies.

Of 44 herbal supplements tested, one-third showed outright substitution, meaning there was no trace of the plant advertised on the bottle — only another plant in its place.

Many were adulterated with ingredients not listed on the label, like rice, soybean and wheat, which are used as fillers.

In some cases, these fillers were the only plant detected in the bottle — a health concern for people with allergies or those seeking gluten-free products, said the study's lead author, Steven G. Newmaster, a biology professor and botanical director of the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario at the University of Guelph.

The findings, published in the journal BMC Medicine, follow a number of smaller studies conducted in recent years that have suggested a sizable percentage of herbal products are not what they purport to be. But because the latest findings are backed by DNA testing, they offer perhaps the most credible evidence to date of adulteration, contamination and mislabeling in the medicinal supplement industry, a rapidly growing area of alternative medicine that includes an estimated 29,000 herbal products and substances sold throughout North America.

"This suggests that the problems are widespread and that quality control for many companies, whether through ignorance, incompetence or dishonesty, is unacceptable," said David Schardt, a senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an advocacy group. "Given these results, it's hard to recommend any herbal supplements to consumers."

Representatives of the supplement industry said that while mislabeling of supplements was a legitimate concern, they did not believe it reached the extent suggested by the new research.

Stefan Gafner, the chief science officer at the American Botanical Council, a nonprofit group that promotes the use of herbal supplements, said the study was flawed, in part because the bar-coding technology it used could not always identify herbs that have been purified and highly processed.

"Over all, I would agree that quality control is an issue in the herbal industry," Dr. Gafner said. "But I think that what's represented here is overblown. I don't think it's as bad as it looks according to this study."

The Food and Drug Administration has used bar-coding technology to warn and in some cases prosecute sellers of seafood found to be "misbranded." The DNA technique has also been used in studies of herbal teas, which showed that a significant percentage contain herbs and ingredients that are not listed on their labels.

But policing the supplement industry is a special challenge. The F.D.A. requires that companies test the products they sell to make sure that they are safe. But the system essentially operates on the honor code. Unlike prescription drugs, supplements are generally considered safe until proved otherwise.

Under a 1994 law, they can be sold and marketed with little regulatory oversight, and they are pulled from shelves generally only after complaints of serious injury. The F.D.A. audits a small number of companies, but even industry representatives say more oversight is needed.

"The regulations are very appropriate and rigorous," said Duffy MacKay of the Council for Responsible Nutrition, a supplement industry trade group. "But we need a strong regulator enforcing the full force of the law. F.D.A. resources are limited, and therefore enforcement has not historically been as rigorous as it could be."

Shelly Burgess, a spokeswoman for the F.D.A., said that companies were required to adhere to a set of good manufacturing practices designed to prevent adulteration, but that many were ignoring the rules.

"Unfortunately, we are seeing a very high percentage — approximately 70 percent — of firms' noncompliance," she said, "and we are very active in taking enforcement actions against such violations."

DNA bar coding was developed about a decade ago at the University of Guelph. Instead of sequencing entire genomes, scientists realized that they could examine genes from a standardized region of every genome to identify species of plants and animals. These short sequences can be quickly analyzed — much like the bar codes on the items at a supermarket — and compared with others in an electronic database. An electronic reference library at Guelph, called the International Barcode of Life Project, contains over 2.6 million bar code records for almost 200,000 species of plants and animals.

The testing technique is not foolproof. It can identify the substances in a supplement, but it cannot determine their potency. And because the technology relies on the detection of DNA, it may not be able to identify concentrated chemical extracts that do not contain genetic material, or products in which the material has been destroyed by heat and processing.

But Dr. Newmaster emphasized that only powders and pills were used in the new research, not extracts. In addition, the DNA testing nearly always detected some plant material in the samples — just not always the plant or herb named on the label.

Some of the adulteration problems may be inadvertent. Cross-contamination can occur in fields where different plants are grown side by side and picked at the same time, or in factories where the herbs are packaged. Dr. Gafner of the American Botanical Council said that rice, starch and other compounds were sometimes added during processing to keep powdered herbs from clumping, just as kernels of rice are added to salt shakers.

But that does not explain many of the DNA results. For instance, the study found that one product advertised as black cohosh — a North American plant and popular remedy for hot flashes and other menopause symptoms — actually contained a related Asian plant, Actaea asiatica, that can be toxic to humans.

Those findings mirror a similar study of black cohosh supplements conducted at Stony Brook University medical center last year. Dr. David A. Baker, a professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive medicine, bought 36 black cohosh supplements from online and chain stores. Bar coding tests showed that a quarter of them were not black cohosh, but instead contained an ornamental plant from China.

Dr. Baker called the state of supplement regulation "the Wild West," and said most consumers had no idea how few safeguards were in place. "If you had a child who was sick and three out of 10 penicillin pills were fake, everybody would be up in arms," Dr. Baker said. "But it's O.K. to buy a supplement where three out of 10 pills are fake. I don't understand it. Why does this industry get away with that?"

Analysis: Republicans plan 2014 campaign around Obamacare chaos [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Just a few short weeks ago, Republican elders could only hope that time would make voters forget about the government shutdown the party engineered in October.

Now, with millions of Americans in an uproar over health insurance policies canceled because of President Barack Obama’s health care law, Republicans believe they could seize control of the Senate and build on their majority in the House of Representatives in the November 2014 congressional elections.

Republican strategist Karl Rove, architect of George W. Bush’s two presidential victories, said Obamacare could hurt Democratic candidates more than in 2010.

“In 2014, it’s likely to be a bigger, more obvious and equally deadly issue for Democrats, especially incumbent Democrats in red, even purple states and districts who voted for the monstrosity,” he told Reuters.

Groups allied to Republicans are already running digital ads against vulnerable Democrats, with TV ads coming in the months ahead.

“2014 will be a referendum on the failures of this administration,” said Representative Greg Walden, head of the House Republican campaign committee.

Some in the party, however, are warning conservative Tea Party Republicans not to push the government into another shutdown or risk a debt default in upcoming budget talks, out of fear of voter backlash.

“Republicans need to play it smart,” said Republican strategist Charlie Black. “We can shift the focus to our own vulnerabilities if we participated in another government shutdown or resisted extending the debt limit.”

Democrats already would have to beat historical odds to pick up congressional seats next November, since the party that controls the White House usually loses seats in these so-called mid-term elections.

The Democrats’ chances appear even worse when the president’s approval rating is below 50 percent, and a Quinnipiac University poll this week put Obama at 39 percent.

Support for congressional Democrats has dropped nearly 4 percentage points from a month ago, when the government was shut down and the debt ceiling fight was unresolved, according to a compilation by website Real Clear Politics of so-called “generic” congressional race polls, which test voter preferences by party. Republicans’ support dropped 1 percentage point.

Democrats control the 100-member Senate by a margin of 55-45, meaning a six-seat swing would tilt the chamber to Republicans. Of the 33 Senate seats that will be on the ballot next November, 20 are held by Democrats, and many of them are seen as vulnerable.

Indeed, five Democrats who face voters in 2014 – Oregon’s Jeff Merkley, Louisiana’s Mary Landrieu, North Carolina’s Kay Hagan, Arkansas’ Mark Pryor and California’s Dianne Feinstein -were among the sponsors last week of a Senate bill designed to stem the wave of health insurance cancellations.

Republicans control the House by 234 to 200, and could see their majority increased despite the lingering hangover from the Tea Party-backed shutdown in October that sent the approval rating of Congress down to historic lows.

“Obamacare has essentially neutralized the Democrats’ momentum from the shutdown. It’s offset it,” said Dave Wasserman, a political analyst at the nonpartisan Cook Political Report.

“All things being equal Republicans ought to be able to gain seats in 2014 because the composition of the electorate will be more favorable to Republicans,” he said. Lower turnout in non-presidential elections often favors the GOP.

November 2014 is still a long way away, though.

A repeat performance of the government shutdown this winter – when congress will confront new deadlines for raising the debt ceiling and funding the government – could turn the tables once again.

So could a dramatic improvement in the implementation of Obamacare or a turnaround in the economy that speeds up growth and creates more jobs.

INTERVENING EVENTS

But Republicans see things playing out in their favor next year.

Obama’s bid to persuade insurers to extend policies through 2014 for people whose insurance plans are being canceled means there could be a repeat of the current chaos just in time for the election.

Americans could face a perfect storm, losing coverage, shopping for new plans or suffering sticker shock from higher premiums, all while deciding on who to vote for during the heat of the 2014 campaign season.

Democrats dismiss such talk as political bravado and believe Obamacare could provide a net plus for Democratic candidates next November, assuming the troubled HealthCare.gov website is functioning smoothly.

“They don’t want Obamacare to work,” said Democratic National Committee spokesman Mo Elleithee. “They are actually afraid of it working. Why? Because they know once people begin to enjoy the benefits that come with a better and more affordable healthcare system, they won’t want to give them up.”

Still, even Obama sees the issue as a drag on Democrats who support his Affordable Care Act.

“There is no doubt that our failure to roll out the ACA smoothly has put a burden on Democrats, whether they’re running or not, because they stood up and supported this effort through thick and thin,” he told a news conference on Thursday.

He spoke just before 39 Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives joined with anti-Obamacare Republicans to pass a “fix” to the insurance cancellations that Obama said he would veto. Twenty-nine of the Democrats are in potentially competitive races in 2014.

Obamacare woes are already hitting the re-election campaign of North Carolina’s Hagan, an Obamacare booster who had a big lead over her Republican challengers but has seen them draw nearly even with her. The Obamacare rollout is seen as a factor.

Allies of Kentucky Republican Senator Mitch McConnell have been running TV and radio ads in the state tying his Democratic challenger, Alison Lundergan Grimes, to Obamacare.

“The DNC thinks they are going to run on Obamacare in 2014, but all of the activity we’ve seen from Democrats running in 2014 shows us just how scared they are,” said Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

Republicans’ ability to focus on a core issue and keep from being sidetracked will test the party in the months ahead, if the past is any guide.

“I think the ground shifted this week in a pretty dramatic way,” said Republican strategist Scott Reed. “It just feels like things are changing for the better, and there will be no more government shutdown silliness.”

Top Democrat Pelosi denies party members retreating from Obamacare [ BeritaTerkini ]

By David Morgan and Deborah Zabarenko

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives said on Sunday that her party would not abandon President Barack Obama’s landmark healthcare reform law, despite unrelenting Republican opposition and emerging signs of market turmoil for consumers and health insurers.

Two days after 39 House Democrats joined Republicans on a bill aimed at undermining the law known as Obamacare, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi denied that Democrats have lost confidence in Obama’s ability to overcome a botched rollout of his signature domestic policy achievement.

“There’s a lot of whoop-de-do and ado about what’s happening,” Pelosi told NBC’s “Meet the Press” program.

“It doesn’t mean: Oh, it’s a political issue, so we’re going to run away from it. No. It’s too valuable for the American people,” she said, claiming similar numbers of Democratic lawmakers have joined Republicans on votes that challenged Obamacare in the past.

“Democrats stand tall in support of the Affordable Care Act,” Pelosi said.

Her comments come at a time of intensifying concern for Democrats, who face a tough midterm election fight or control of Congress in 2014.

Democrats have been hit by a public backlash over millions of people who have had their policies canceled because the plans do not meet new consumer protections mandated by the law. The administration’s troubled enrollment Website, HealthCare.gov, also is still not working properly, more than six weeks after its launch.

Friday’s Democratic support for a House Republican bill that would allow insurers to continue selling older policies could be a sign that the administration’s coalition in Congress could be fraying, according to analysts. Several Democrats have already produced similar legislation.

Pressure from his Democratic Party prompted Obama to say last week that insurers could extend their existing policies for a year even if they don’t complying with the law.

But that decision stirred objections from insurers and some state insurance regulators about higher costs for consumers and potential solvency threats for insurance companies.

“What I really want to focus on is how do we address these reasonable problems. We have an interest in doing so, so … the markets don’t blow up,” Karen Ignagni, president and chief executive of America’s Health Insurance Plans, an industry trade group, told the “Fox News Sunday” program.

She appeared with Ben Nelson, chief executive of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, which represents state regulators. He said states are worried that insurers could get saddled with unexpected losses as a result of the so-called Obamacare fix that extends non-compliant policies for a year.

“They want to make certain that this doesn’t shift the cost to the point that insurers face and risk insolvency,” he said.

MANDATE ON AMERICANS

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mandates that most Americans be enrolled in health coverage by March 31 or face a penalty. But the administration has made only partial progress fixing technical glitches that have made HealthCare.gov inaccessible to consumers in the 36 states it serves as it approaches a key December 15 enrollment deadline to receive coverage beginning January 1.

Pelosi acknowledged that HealthCare.gov will work well for only 80 percent of visitors by November 30, when officials have promised to have it operating smoothly for the vast majority of them. That could leave 1-in-5 potential enrollees mired in glitches during a brief two-week window before December 15.

“That’s just by the end of this month. It’s not acceptable ongoing,” she said.

Obama met with insurance executives on Friday at the White House for what was described as a “brainstorming” session about cancellation victims and the enrollment challenges. Both sides have since pledged to work together.

The outward image of cooperation has done little to hide concerns. Insurers and regulators worry that cheaper plans with fewer protections and less-robust coverage will entice younger and healthier consumers to buy them, leaving Obamacare’s new online marketplaces with older, sicker beneficiaries who cost more to insure.

The administration is looking at ways to insulate insurers from losses, though there has been no decision about what to do.

“Under the rules of law of large numbers, which is what you get with actuarial science, the more people you have in the plan, generally the better the plan is. So excluding certain people from the plan creates certain issues,” Nelson said.

Many U.S. states are hesitant to embrace Obama’s fix. California, Colorado, Florida, South Carolina and Ohio said they would act on it. Washington, Vermont and Rhode Island said they would not. Seventeen other state insurance departments queried by Reuters said they did not have enough information and were still trying to decide how to proceed.

‘Breaking Bad’ Alternate Ending Reveals It Was Just a Dream [ BeritaTerkini ]

‘Breaking Bad’ Alternate Ending Reveals It Was Just a Dream

Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek revisit their ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ characters

The bloody and brutal series finale of Breaking Bad, which aired to tremendous fanfare at the end of September, has been combed over for every last insight into the remaining mysteries of its characters. It’s been hard for fans to let go of Walter White and his associates.

But what if the ending had taken a very different direction? What if, as many close viewers of the show surely suspected, the whole saga of the chemistry-teacher-turned-druglord was all a dream in the sleeping mind of Hal, the hapless dad Bryan Cranston played on the Fox comedy Malcolm in the Middle from 2000 until 2006? An alternate ending to the series that was released this weekend shows Cranston and his Malcolm co-star Jane Kaczmarek playing out that scenario, in a nod to the finale of Newhart.

Relive Walter White’s Lowest Lows on ‘Breaking Bad’

“I just had the scariest dream!” Hal tells his wife, Lois, after waking up in terror. “I was this meth dealer. I was this world-class chemist, and I cooked and I sold this ultra-pure methamphetamine!”

“You cooking anything?” Lois quips.

Recounting the dream, Hal tells Lois about a DEA agent brother who “looked like the guy from The Shield” and a man-child who “would use the B-word a lot.”

According to Buzzfeed, the clip is a DVD extra from the Breaking Bad: The Complete Series box set, which is due out on November 26th.

‘Yeezus’ Resurrected as Kanye West Resumes Tour in Philadelphia [ BeritaTerkini ]

Rapper picks up where he left off with a fiery, confident performance

Kanye West’s Yeezus tour resumed last night in Philadelphia, bouncing back from a series of postponed and canceled dates after stage equipment was damaged in a truck collision. Despite the fact that Philadelphia’s show was the first performance since October 28th, and the first following that string of complications, West took to the stage with energy and confidence. Throughout the two-hour-plus show, he delivered a fiery, dedicated performance.

Perhaps because the Yeezus show is so structured, including troupes of actors, fireworks and even an exploding mountain, West had little stage banter and didn’t directly address the postponements. However, on an extended version of “Runaway,” which was one of the show’s most moving and revealing moments, West sermonized from an altar (actually a keyboard) that had been brought on stage, speaking about his own struggles and perception of himself.

Find out Why Kanye West Made Rolling Stone’s List of the New Immortals

“Anybody that’s a fan [of me] is a fan of themselves,” West declared in the middle of the song. “Anybody that’s a fan can do anything!”

As the monologue progressed, West touched on a variety of topics. “They don’t want you to be you,” he said of modern radio programmers. He also used an extended metaphor to address his feelings of persecution for stepping outside convention in his art: “If a slave got too strong, and he was talking too loud,” he said, “They’d say . . . We’re gonna put this slave in front of a crowd and whip his ass until ‘what now?!’”

West’s forceful speech was representative of the show itself. Almost every song found West going all out. On “Coldest Winter,” which West explained was written about his mother’s untimely passing, he lay sprawled on the stage, which had been tilted upwards to resemble a jagged cliff. As he performed the song, manufactured snow drifted down, heightening the sense of West’s despair. By contrast, the booming “Black Skinhead” was played at such a loud volume that the arena shook as West proved an animated showman, whipping his entire body with the beat.

As with previous stops, the whole show was high concept, with a stage built to look like a gigantic mountain. For most of the evening, West wore a variety of masks that obscured his face entirely. A group of women, alternatively dressed in prayer robes or flesh-toned body suits, would enter and leave the stage, occasionally bringing votives and other times writhing around West in a simulated orgy. One of the creepiest and most clever moments came during the middle of the concert, when a hairy creature with glowing red eyes leered at West from the mountain, never interacting with him but constantly watching.

Despite previous setbacks, the entire show went off smoothly. West seemed excited to see his vision executed and equally thrilled to see how well it was received. Near the end of the set, West proclaimed his gratitude to the crowd: “Philly, thank you for a wonderful night!” In light of the show’s high concept and tracks like “I Am a God,” West’s performance on his first night back served to show the human side of the guy that put out an album called Yeezus.

AP IMPACT: Seeking lung donors after at-home death [ BeritaTerkini ]

The pair of lungs sits inside a clear dome, gently inflating as doctors measure how well they’ll breathe if implanted into a patient who desperately needs a new set.

It’s a little-known twist of nature — your lungs can live on for a while after you die. The air left inside keeps them from deteriorating right away as other organs do.

An innovative experiment now aims to use that hour or more window of time to boost lung transplants by allowing donations from people who suddenly collapse and die at home instead of in a hospital.

“There aren’t enough lungs. We’re burying them,” said Dr. Thomas Egan of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, who is leading the project. “It turns out your lungs don’t die when you do.”

This is a new frontier for transplants.

Today, registered organ donors don’t get to fulfill that last wish if they die outside of a hospital. The U.S. doesn’t have a system to recover their organs quickly enough. It can be an added shock to grieving families, and a waste of potentially good organs that might ease transplant shortages.

“The general public does not understand how hard it is to become an organ donor. They assume if they sign their card, when they die, then it will happen,” said bioethicist Arthur Caplan of New York University’s Langone Medical Center. “Only 2 to 3 percent of people die in circumstances that let them be organ donors.”

The new study in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina is trying to change that, focusing on lungs because Egan’s research suggests they last the longest.

Here’s how it works.

Someone collapses with cardiac arrest. Emergency workers exhaust attempts at CPR. If the driver’s license lists the person as a registered donor, the local organ recovery agency tracks down next-of-kin for permission to participate in the research.

If that happens within about an hour of death, then workers pump a little air into the lungs to preserve them while the body is transported to an operating room for organ recovery.

Workers wheeled a cooler bearing the first set of lungs donated in the experiment into Egan’s lab for the next crucial step — determining if they’re really healthy.

Inside the science fiction-looking domed machine, a ventilator slowly filled the lungs. They resembled a turkey awaiting roasting. Some black speckles on the outside didn’t worry Egan. They’re a sign of city living, or maybe earlier smoking. It’s deeper inside that counts.

Egan infused them with a special fluid that flows like blood normally would. This so-called ex vivo lung perfusion preserves the lungs even longer. It can tell if they transfer oxygen properly or help spot signs of disease. Egan also peeked inside with a bronchoscope, looking for abnormalities.

These lungs didn’t pass the test because Egan found some early disease. But they did show it was possible to get a donation in time to try.

Lungs that do pass will be transplanted into patients willing to take a chance on these nontraditional organs, as part of the study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

“That would be the greatest thing, to be able to breathe normal,” said Lisa Bowman, 51, of Union Grove, N.C.

Bowman has been on the waiting list for new lungs for two years after a rare genetic disease gradually damaged her own until, she says, it became like “breathing through a pinhole.” She hopes Egan’s research will help her find a match more quickly.

Some previous U.S. attempts at out-of-hospital donation of another organ, kidneys, didn’t pan out because of logistical hurdles. But transplant specialists are watching this newest experiment closely, saying that if it works, it eventually could open the way to many more donations — not just lungs but maybe other organs, too.

“We’ve had a number of very disgruntled family members that wanted to donate (a loved one’s organs) and weren’t able to,” said Dr. Jeffrey Punch, transplant surgery chief at the University of Michigan. Spurred by that family reaction, in a few months, his team plans to try recovering kidneys from cardiac arrest victims who are rushed to the emergency room but can’t be saved and turn out to be registered donors.

In North Carolina, Egan’s study likewise will try to recover lungs from people who die in the ER as well as in the community.

Today, the vast majority of donated organs come from people who suffer a severe injury and are hooked to a ventilator for days, even weeks, until doctors determine they are brain-dead. Machinery keeps blood and oxygen flowing until surgeons can collect organs deemed healthy enough.

What about registered donors who collapse with cardiac arrest at home, the office or the gym — and efforts at CPR fail? Experience overseas shows it’s possible to take quick steps to preserve and recover their organs. Doctors in Spain have transplanted kidneys, livers and lungs from these unconventional donors. France has reported some success with kidneys.

In the United States, more than 6,000 people died last year while awaiting one of those organs.

Lungs are in particularly short supply. Only 15 percent to 20 percent of donated lungs are usable, often because complications during the donor’s hospitalization damaged them. Just 1,700 lungs transplants are performed each year, compared with nearly 11,000 kidney transplants from deceased donors.

Egan, a cardiothoracic surgeon, said doctors don’t even suggest the possibility of a lung transplant to thousands who might benefit because there aren’t enough donors.

Yet the Institute of Medicine has estimated that as many as 22,000 people a year who die outside of hospitals could be potential organ donors if scientists settle some ethical and practical questions.

Buying time to recover those organs means doing some things not normally done to dead bodies, noted bioethicist Caplan, and that can mean ventilating lungs or filtering blood to the kidneys.

How will grieving families react? Is it possible to tell who’s a registered donor, and find next-of-kin, in time to try?

New York City studied kidney donations after at-home deaths in 2011.

Dr. Stephen Wall of Bellevue Hospital Center said community and religious groups met with researchers and were interested. But study rules restricted which deaths were eligible, and researchers had just 20 minutes to get initial family permission. In six months, nine deaths were considered but didn’t qualify, often because the deceased hadn’t previously registered as an organ donor, Wall said. New York is among states with low donor registration rates.

Wall’s team is considering trying again with lungs, because of the longer time window.

Lung cells don’t depend on blood flow for oxygen, Egan explained. When the heart stops beating, they use what oxygen is left in the air sacs and airways.

For how long? In a series of experiments with animals, Egan showed lungs stay viable for an hour, or four hours if they are ventilated, before they’re cooled to await transplant.

That ventilation is one key to the $ 4 million, three-year study, because when emergency workers exhaust attempts at CPR and declare someone dead, they typically leave behind the breathing tube inserted in the person’s throat. That makes it simple to restart ventilation to preserve the lungs, Egan said.

“If we can get the lungs ventilated within an hour, and then removed within an hour or two and cooled, we think they’ll work just fine,” he said.

Kidneys don’t have as long a survival window. But in Michigan, Punch has a similar preservation plan: Insert a few tubes near the kidneys to filter blood to them until they’re recovered.

Fast retrieval isn’t the only issue. Surgeons don’t know if nontraditional organs work as well, cautioned Dr. Bryan Meyers of Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

Chest X-rays and other in-hospital donor testing determine the quality of today’s traditionally donated lungs.

“This trial is very timely and very pertinent,” Meyers said, to see if testing in that domed machine could substitute for that hospital track record.

Egan notes that lung disease is the nation’s third-leading killer. He says the untapped pool of potential donors who die outside of the hospital could expand transplants significantly.

“There are huge logistical hurdles,” he said. “But if we’re right, this would have a profound impact on the number of lungs that are available for transplant.”

3409725350_af153ec772_z

Kimberly Ovitz, Georgina Bloomberg, Amanda Hearst

Kimberly Ovitz, Georgina Bloomberg, Amanda Hearst

China reform winners consumer, healthcare stocks; losers, big banks [ BeritaTerkini ]

By Clement Tan

HONG KONG (Reuters) – China's mass consumer, healthcare and non-banking financial counters may well be the early winners in the country's stock markets this week after Beijing promised the most sweeping economic and social reforms in nearly three decades.

Equity market investors are likely to cheer a plan to increase private ownership in state-owned enterprises, but the longer-term prognosis will likely vary across sectors.

The big losers could well be the "big four" state banks, ICBC , China Construction Bank , Agricultural Bank of China and Bank Of China , which dominate formal lending. They are already feeling the pinch of interest rate liberalization and China's leaders have promised to accelerate financial sector reform.

"In the near term, we believe market sentiment should be lifted by the detailed announcement of the Third Plenum released Friday night," Goldman Sachs China equity strategists said in a client note referring to a four-day conclave of Communist Party leaders that set the reform agenda, promising "decisive" results by 2020.

The 60-point plan included land and residency reform to make it easier for rural Chinese to migrate to urban areas, a relaxation of the country's one-child policy and allowing markets to play a greater role in the economy.

Stock markets in Hong Kong and China had rallied on Friday after an apparent leak of part of the plan circulated on social media. The China Enterprises Index of the top offshore Chinese listings in Hong Kong jumped 3 percent for its biggest percentage gain in three months.

This could continue since investors are underinvested in Chinese equities, analysts said. A Bank of America-Merrill Lynch survey showed that just 11 percent of emerging market funds had an "overweight" position on Chinese equities in November ahead of the Communist Party meeting, down 45 percentage points from October. Since the reforms announced on Friday have helped dispel doubts about the reform credentials of President Xi Jinping, some of the funds could upgrade their view of the markets and filter money back in.

Investment into China-focused equity funds has been choppy in the last month, but data from global funds tracker EFPR showed there were net inflows in the week to November 13, despite market losses after the initial communiqué on the reforms released late on Tuesday had disappointed.

FOLLOW THROUGH KEY

Still, much will depend on how the relevant ministries and government agencies follow through on executing the reform blueprint. That will provide clues on the urgency and priorities of the reform program, Goldman Sachs said.

China's health ministry tempered expectations on Saturday that the relaxation of China's one-child policy may eventually see restrictions lifted entirely, suggesting provinces may vary how quickly they implement the latest change. The reform plan increases the number of couples who can have a second child.

That uncertainty may temper gains for the Chinese dairy and baby goods sectors, whose sales could benefit from an increase in China's birth rate. But for the economy as a whole, some scholars and analysts say the change in the one-child policy is unlikely to do enough to reverse China's shrinking labor pool or convince many women to have more children as living costs rise.

Still, other consumer names, such as white goods retailers and food and beverage producers, will likely be lifted by plans to ease restrictions currently limiting the pace of rural-to-urban migration. Policymakers want to speed up the migration to bolster consumption and services, which they see as the future of the economy after years of investment- and export-led growth.

Limits on migration to China's biggest cities largely remain, suggesting policymakers are eager to spur growth to second-tier cities, especially as rising property prices in first-tier cities are a major concern for the central government.

The reforms pointed to an acceleration of property taxes at "the appropriate time", but did not explicitly mention crimping property demand as a policy priority.

The lingering policy uncertainty could trigger a rotation out of outperformers in the Chinese property sector such as Country Garden and Shimao Property into larger rivals, whose share prices have lagged this year, such as China Overseas Land and China Resources Land .

Still, Beijing's move to make its urbanization policy more equitable for rural land owners will lead to an acceleration of farmland transfers in 2014 as smallholdings are consolidated, Jefferies analysts Jack Lu and Laban Yu said in a client note.

They said this should benefit agricultural machinery and high-tech farming sectors in the months ahead, such as First Tractor , Gansu Dunhuang Seed and Jiangsu Yangnong Chemical .

A plan to increase the dividends that state-owned enterprises pay to the state will likely be channeled to pay for the expansion of the social security system, analysts said. That could give a further boost to the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors. China's healthcare sub-index has already risen 20 percent this year.

For state-owned enterprises, which dominate many economic sectors, the impact of the reforms were not clear, analysts said.

Fuel price reforms would encourage small competitors to loosen the state's grip on the energy sector, but giving markets more influence to price energy could mean rising prices, boosting earnings of the likes of state-owned Sinopec Corp and Petrochina .

Petrochina has already reported a 20 percent rise in third-quarter profit after Beijing hiked gas prices and allowed petrol and diesel pump prices to track international crude costs more closely.

BIG BANKS

Interest rate liberalization has already narrowed net interest margins for the "big four" state banks and the squeeze looks set to tighten further. China's central bank governor pledged soon after the reforms were announced to "pull out all stops" to deepen financial sector reforms.

The introduction of private banks will increase competition for cash deposits and loan demand. A sub index of offshore Chinese financial listings in Hong Kong is down 4.5 percent so far this year, compared with a 1.4 percent loss for the MSCI China .

The banking sector is also vulnerable in the short term to a sharp rise in onshore money market rates amid a tightening of money supply. The central bank signaled earlier this month that it would rein in money supply growth.

On the other hand, non-banking financials, such as brokerages and insurers, will stand to gain from moves to deepen China's capital markets. The reforms included making it easier for firms to launch initial public offerings, which have been suspended in mainland markets for more than a year.

Weekend in Valencia: a complete itinerary [ BeritaTerkini ]

Valencia might just be the perfect weekend destination: historic centre; a unique arts and science complex; sandy beach; lots of green space; fantastic food; and a great climate. Spain’s third city was established by the Romans, occupied by Muslims, and won back by Spain in 1238, when its influence grew until it was one of the most important Mediterranean cities of the 15th century. These days, it attracts nearly 2 million international visitors per year (about 80,000 from the UK). Many come for the extraordinary Las Fallas in March, a wild five-day fiesta in honour of San José, when hundreds of giant puppets are paraded and set on fire. But it is a party town all-year round – and if you miss Las Fallas, you can always visit the Museo Fallero to see the ninots (figurines) that have survived the flames.

All the places numbered in the article can be found on this Google map of the city

FRIDAY

9.30pm

Head out to bar-hop and eat tapas in the Ciutat Vella (old town). Calle de Caballeros is thronged with bars and restaurants, as are the streets and squares north, into Barrio del Carmen, and south, into the Centro Histórico. The city’s La Tassa district is particularly well-served by tapas restaurants. One, La Taberna de Marisa (latabernademarisa.com), 1, is known for its morcilla de Burgos – rounds of rice-heavy black pudding, crispy without, soft within – but its salted anchovies and croquetas are equally delicious. Try agua de Valencia at one of the bars on Plaza del Negrito: it is a more lethal version of buck’s fizz (cava, orange juice, sugar and spirits), invented in the 1920s and still widely drunk. Restaurants stay open until at least midnight at the weekends and most bars until about 2am, but if you want to stay out later, try Radio City (radiocityvalencia.es), 2, a club with flamenco nights and other events.

SATURDAY

10am

Valencia market, Spain
Valencia’s brilliant Mercado Central, one of the best and biggest food markets in Europe

Spend the morning exploring the old town, where all the sights are within walking distance. Valencia has three main squares: Plaza de la Virgen, Plaza de la Reina and Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Start the day with a coffee at one of the outdoor tables in the atmospheric Plaza de la Virgen.

From here, head to the vast 13th-century cathedral (catedraldevalencia.es), 3, a hotchpotch of Roman, gothic, baroque and renaissance architecture on the site of the old mosque. Inside, have a look at San Vincente’s withered left arm, a relic that has terrified generations of Valencian schoolchildren; the “Holy Grail”, a chalice dating to at least Christ’s time; two Goya paintings, one of which depicts a fantastically horrifying exorcism; and the windows – they are made from fine alabaster, because Valencia’s light is too dazzling for glass. Climb the 207 steps of the Miguelete tower for the best views of the city.

Next go to La Lonja de la Seda (whc.unesco.org), 4, a gothic chamber of commerce built to impress visiting merchants in the 16th century and to symbolise the city’s wealth and power. It is now a world heritage site and beautiful in its own right, but also fascinating as a secular building designed with the splendour usually reserved for religion.

Midday

On the other side of the Plaza del Mercado is the biggest fresh-produce market in Europe, built in the modernismo style (the Spanish variant of art nouveau). Mercado Central (mercadocentralvalencia.es), 5, is still the place where most Valencians buy their groceries and is a great, light-filled place to wander around and haggle for ham. Stop at La Huertana, a little stand-up cafe inside the market, for the archetypical Valencian snack: horchata and fartons. Similar to churros con chocolate, this is a milky drink and a pastry, but the Valencian version is served cold. Horchata, made from tiger nuts, is creamy, slightly grainy and incredibly sweet. Fartons are light, finger-shaped buns, thickly dusted with sugar. Dangerously moreish.

While you’re in the old town, squeeze in a quick visit to the National Ceramics Museum (mnceramica.mcu.es), 6, housed in a rococo palace said to be Valencia’s Versailles in (extreme) miniature. At the very least, take a look at its brilliantly over-the-top facade: the doorway is flanked by two muscular figures, with a statue of the virgin – who can be seen all over the city – above. Decorative ceramic tiles are also ubiquitous – to buy ceramic souvenirs, try Artesania Yuste (Plaça Miracle del Mocadoret), 7.

2pm

Take a tram to the beach for lunch. Restaurants and bars line the seafront, but the quality is variable so get off the tram a couple of stops early (Grau is closest) and head to the old fishermen’s quarter. Calle José Benlliure (and surrounding streets) is full of bars and tapas restaurants, including Casa Montana (emilianobodega.com), 8, one of the oldest restaurants in Valencia. You can eat in the busy front bar, lined with wine barrels, or in the more spacious back room, but the best table is squeezed into a space between the two. You have to duck under the bar to get to it, next to the kitchen and the jamón-carving station. Don’t miss the fat boquerónes fritas (fried anchovies), meaty brown broad beans stewed with chorizo, roasted piquillo peppers stuffed with béchamel and tuna, and, of course, the translucent slivers of jamón ibérico.

4.30pm

Destino 56
Destino 56

Follow a long lunch with a siesta on the beach (Las Arenas or Las Malvarrosa), a 10-minute walk away. Valencia has three kilometres of long, sandy beaches and more than 300 sunny days a year – it can be warm enough to swim and sunbathe into November. Have an early-evening pick-me-up at a bar on Paseo Neptuno, the palm tree-lined beach promenade. Valencians have embraced “gin tonic”: Destino 56 (destino56.es), 9, for example, has 15 craft gins and three premium tonics – measures are huge and served in a proper balloon glass with lots of ice.

9pm

Choose between upmarket or hip Valencia. L’Eixample is a wealthy district just south of the centre, with wide boulevards and grand art nouveau buildings. Its boutiques and delis include Espacio 1880 (turron1880.com), 10, which specialises in all kinds of turrón, and Torreblanca (torreblanca.net), 11, which made Prince Felipe’s wedding cake. Mercado Colón (mercadocolon.es), 12, a gorgeous example of modernismo, is now full of cafes and bars, though it still has a gourmet food market downstairs.

For dinner, the city has four Michelin-starred restaurants. One of them, Vertical (restaurantevertical.com), 13, is on the ninth floor of a hotel east of L’Eixample, with incredible night-time views of the City of Arts and Sciences. (The entrance is quite confusing – go to Hotel Confortel Aqua 4 and take the lift.) There is no choice, only a daily changing, multi-course set menu. Dishes might include a ruffled egg yolk, beef with foie gras, and deconstructed fudge cake.

Alternatively, head further south to Ruzafa, which has overtaken Carmen as the city’s hippest area. It is a working-class, ethnically diverse quarter that is being colonised by young creatives – Valencia’s version of Brixton in London. It is full of vintage clothes shops (eg Kauf Vintage), bike shops, and homeware stores such as Gnomo (gnomo.eu), 14, which sells work by contemporary Valencian artist Paula Bonet and displays a mural by Vinz, Ruzafa’s answer to Banksy. Espacio 40 (c/Puerto Rico), 15, is an art gallery/wine shop run by a Valencian woman and her Chilean husband. The covered market (c/Padre Perera), 16, gives a taste of pre-gentrified Ruzafa – its one bar caters to older locals. Younger drinkers head for three “bookshop bars” – Cosecha Roja, Slaughterhouse and Ubik Cafe, 17 – a Parisian theatre bar (Café Tocado), or “The Corner”, a crossroads with a bar on each corner. Restaurants range from traditional tapas and bocadillos (El Rus) to oysters (De Claire), South American restaurants, and fusion (El Rodamón). It’s a small district, so wander around and you won’t go far wrong.

SUNDAY

10am

Most cities have riverbanks to stroll along; Valencia has a whole river. The Jardín del Túria is a unique, 9km-long swathe of greenery through the city. When the river Túria flooded – again – in 1957, it was diverted south. The former riverbed is now a landscaped parkland walk with trees, sculptures and water features, crisscrossed by 18 bridges – some designed by Valencian architect Santiago Calatrava. The gardens connect the Bioparc in the west and the City of Arts and Sciences (CAC) in the east. The zoo (bioparcvalencia.es), 18, is a modern, immersive animal park that recreates natural habitats, but in a weekend you’ll probably only have time for CAC (cac.es), 19. You can walk there along the gardens in about 45 minutes. The futuristic complex was mainly designed by Calatrava and includes an opera house, science museum and planetarium. Oceanogràfic is best: more than 45,000 specimens swimming around Europe’s biggest aquarium. Look out for the spooky sandfish, awe-inspiring white whales and shoals of leaping dolphins.

2pm

Stroll back towards town and stop for lunch at Les Graelles (grupo-jbl.com), 20, a traditional restaurant with arched stone ceilings, dark-wood furniture and crisp white tablecloths. Paella was invented in Valencia and this is the place to try an authentic version – which, surprisingly, doesn’t contain seafood and is only eaten at lunchtime. Saffron-flavoured rice is served with hunks of rabbit and chicken and a handful of snails, plus some vegetables – perhaps green and broad beans and artichokes. Everyone around the table digs in to the communal pan with their own wooden serving spoon, and washes it down with rioja. (Locals often head to L’Albufera, a nature reserve about 30km along the coast, for their Sunday paella lunch.)

3.30pm

From here, it’s a short walk to the Museo de Bellas Artes (museobellasartesvalencia.gva.es), 21, Spain’s second-biggest art collection, housed in a beautiful 17th-century convent. It has paintings by Spanish greats such as Velázquez (including a masterful self-portrait), El Greco and Goya, plus Valencian artists Pinazo, Benlliure and Sorolla. If admiring modern works of art is more to your taste, IVAM (Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, ivam.es), 22, was the first contemporary art gallery in Spain – you’ll need to catch the Metro or take a cab, though, as the museum’s back in El Carmen.

LOCALS TIPS

Paula Sancho Torregrosa, web editor

By the Flowers bridge, 23, there is a statue of King Jaime I, where children can learn something of our history in a show about him until 24 November (eltorneodelrey.com). Gulliver Park, 24, also in the river gardens, is a great play area. Canguro Verde (facebook.com/canguroverde) 25, is a coffee shop in Ruzafa where kids are welcome.

El Mercado de la Tapinería, a concept market
El Mercado de la Tapinería

Semana Santa Marinera, maritime holy week, in El Cabanyal, the fishermen’s area is an interesting experience. And El Mercado de la Tapinería (mercadodetapineria.com), 26, is a concept market in a downtown square. El Jardín de Monforte, 27, is a quiet and relaxing garden in the centre.

Carla Carrión Palanca, blogger

Few tourists go to Calle Alta and Calle Baja but these two streets in El Carmen (or El Carmé in Valencian), 28, are popular with locals for their charming bars and shops. Jazz lovers might like to try the Jimmy Glass Bar (Calle Baja 28, jimmyglassjazz.net). Or, if a bar crawl is what you’re after, look no further than Calle Alta’s drinking dens.

Where to stay

Accommodation was provided by Hotel Caro (doubles from €137, +34 963 059 000, carohotel.com), 29, a former palace, 200m from the cathedral, which opened in 2012 after seven years of refurbishment. It is one of the oldest buildings in Valencia, with astonishing Roman, Arabic and gothic remains on display alongside sleek, modern furnishings: lots of glossy black and moody lighting. You can eat breakfast – a spread of meats and cheese, bread and fruit, plus unlimited cava – next to the old city walls, or sink into a sunken bath under an ancient beamed ceiling. There are 26 rooms – the three in the attic are especially romantic.

Way to go

Getting there EasyJet (easyjet.com) flies from Gatwick to Valencia; Ryanair (ryanair.com) flies from Stansted, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol and East Midlands

Getting around Valencia has an easy-to-use metro and bus system. Metro lines 3 and 5 take you from the airport to the city centre in about 20 minutes. The Valencia tourist card gives you unlimited travel on public transport, plus discounts at shops, restaurants and museums (€13.50 for 24 hours, €18.00 for 48 hours or €22.50 for 72 hours, valenciatouristcard.com). Valencia is very flat, so cycling is a good way to explore: BEbike has five rental outlets around the city (€2 for 1 hour, €8 for 4 hours, €10 for 24 hours, bebike.es)
